Mason McTavish, Pavel Dorofeyev, and JJ Peterka on the Move

Mason McTavish went to St

The 2026 NHL Draft is making headlines as trades ramp up again in the first round. While it took some time, the Anaheim Ducks traded center Mason McTavish to the St. Louis Blues with the 15th and 29th overall picks in the 2026 NHL Draft.

We know the Blues and Ducks have been talking since Thursday night. It was between the Blues and the New York Rangers, and Ducks GM Pat Verbeek took the better of the two offers as the Rangers, which we’ll get to later, offered one of their trade pieces to Pavel Dorofeyev.

The Blues and Rangers have made an offer for Mason McTavish

McTavish is a great second line center that many teams have been looking to acquire. There are those who are worried about his speed and ball protection, forgetting that he missed training sessions last season due to having a contract. He is expected to bounce back like Jeremy Swayman did in Boston.

Mark Stone, Alex Ovechkin, and Mason McTavish Have a Future with the Ducks?

However, other teams were not willing to pay that much for the player, including the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens.

McTavish has five years left at $7 million per season. That means that for two years in a row, players with contract disputes have been traded by Verbeek and the Ducks. The others were Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale. Clearly, Verbeek is looking for his type of guy in Anaheim. With the 15th overall pick, they selected Nikita Klepov. This deal should have happened if only this player was there.

Pavel Dorofeyev headed for the highway

As previously mentioned, the New York Rangers were in trade talks with the Anaheim Ducks; However, GM Chris Drury pivoted and sold restricted free agent Pavel Dorofeyev. As part of the trade, the Rangers have the 26th overall pick in 2026 (Originally to the Dallas Stars), a 3rd round pick (92nd overall) in 2026, and a top-10-protected first round pick in 2028.

NHL Rumors: Edmonton Oilers, and Vegas Golden Knights

As part of the deal, the New York Rangers offered Dorofeyev a seven-year, $77 million contract with an average annual salary of $11 million.

That’s a good chunk of change for a player who has endured back to back 30 goals. He scored 35 goals in the last two seasons and 37 goals last season.

Vegas had a cap crunch, and GM Kelly McCrimmon wasn’t going to pay Dorofeyev the price he got from the Rangers. The Golden Knights still have problems, as they still have to pay Rasmus Andersson. Will they make other moves?

JJ Peterka on Move Again

Things started before the NHL Draft when the Utah Mammoth traded JJ Peterka to the Boston Bruins for the 23rd overall pick in 2026 and the 2028 first round pick (top 10 protected) that the Bruins received from the Florida Panthers in the Brad Marchand trade.

NHL Trade: Buffalo Sabers Trade JJ Peterka to the Utah Mammoth

Remember last time, Mammoth acquired Peterka from the Buffalo Sabers for Michael Kesselring (now in San Jose) and Josh Doan. Peterka never suited up in Utah after signing a five-year, $38.5 million deal with an AAV of $7.7 million. He still has four years left and will be able to play under coach Marco Sturm.

Let’s see if the change of location helps Peterka.
