Maine Democratic candidate Graham Platner has lost another high-profile progressive in his corner: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Mamdani, during a press conference Tuesday with New York Governor Kathy Hochul, was asked about Platner’s race and his role as a top figure in the Democratic Party after sweeping the primary election where his candidates ousted the Democratic incumbent last month.
“I believe it is time for him to leave the race,” said Mamdani. “And when it comes to my personal endorsement, I’ve made eight endorsements at the federal and state level. They’ve all been here in New York City. I’m incredibly happy that they won their races, and that’s where I’m focused right now.”

When pressed again on whether Platner’s campaign will have an impact on the broader process underway, Mamdani declined to weigh in.
“I think there will be a lot of focus on this campaign that is about to end, and I think there will be many more days to have discussions about what it means beyond that,” he said.

Mamdani, who has never praised Platner’s campaign, is the latest to step forward to remove him from the ever-growing list of Democrats across the country calling for him to drop out of the Maine Senate race after a bombshell report detailing the alleged rape of his ex-girlfriend, Jenny Racicot.
What is remarkable about Mamdani’s termination from Platner is the connection between the two – the growth of the face of the Democratic Party and the person who was overwhelmed by the scandal shared with top aides, including Morris Katz, a key strategist in the campaign for the mayor of the rebellion and the victory of Mamdani.

So far Platner has not said his campaign is over, but in a video statement after the report came out he said he is “taking time to look at the best way forward for the district I love, the people I love, the organization I am a member of and the goal of defeating Susan Collins.”
A number of Senate candidates, who previously kept mum on Platner’s scandals, want him to pull the plug on his campaign. Those include James Talarico in Texas and Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan.

Almost all of his congressional recommendations have evaporated as well, as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, DN.Y., and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., chairwoman of the Senate Democrats’ campaign arm, called for him to resign immediately.
However, who is remarkably quiet, Sen. Bernie Sanders, Vt., Platner’s staunch ally and supporter in Washington, DC, has campaigned with him in Maine and recently defended him after another scandal erupted last month over his alleged “unsettled” behavior with women.
