An 18-year-old Yale student has been charged in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a woman on a Manhattan subway train last month, though his attorney says the allegations are false.
The New York Police Department told Fox News Digital that Ari Shtein, of Washington, DC, was arrested on July 8.
Court records reviewed by Fox News Digital show he faces charges including first-degree sexual assault, aggravated sexual assault, forcible touching on a bus or train, third-degree sexual assault and four counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

The charges stem from an incident reported on June 28 around 3 p.m. while boarding a northbound R train at the Broadway subway station in Manhattan, the NYPD said.
Police say a 30-year-old woman reported that she was sexually assaulted while on a train. He left the station and was transported by EMS to a local hospital for treatment, while the suspect remained on the train.
Court records show that Shtein pleaded not guilty during his arraignment before Judge Ilona B. Coleman and was released on his own recognizance. He is scheduled to return to New York Criminal Court on August 26.

Shtein’s attorney, Priya Chaudhry, denied that in a statement sent to Fox News Digital.
“Every person who hangs with a belt has met people who do not touch themselves on the train. Unfortunately, when Ari visited our City, it was his turn,” said Chaudhry.
“Ari did not attack anyone. He was visiting bookstores with his friend when his life was turned upside down by a woman who lied to him about a horrible crime,” the statement continued. “His reputation has been destroyed. Before a single piece of evidence has been made public, he has been branded a criminal and convicted in a court of public opinion.”

Chaudhry also refuted these allegations on factual grounds.
“The accusations are nonsense. At this woman’s event, she would have had to wear a swimsuit so that this behavior of hers was possible,” he said. “The subway car was packed. If you were on that train, and saw this woman’s behavior, please contact my firm.”
Shtein is on the staff of the opinion bureau of the Yale Daily News, where his most recent column was published in May.
After Shtein was arrested on sexual assault charges, the Yale Daily News announced that it had permanently suspended him from publication.
“We have seen disturbing reports about his arrest,” Yale Daily News Editor-in-Chief Asher Boiskin said in a statement posted on the newspaper’s website. “We have decided to permanently suspend Mr. Shtein from the paper pending legal consequences.”

In an October 2025 article in his Substack, “Mistakes Are Made,” Shtein criticized mandatory sexual misconduct training on campus, saying the programs were ineffective and citing research he said showed they had little effect on preventing sexual violence.
