Regarding the red light, Marmon wrote that LELO’s claims appear to exceed what has been tested. A limited study of the female genitalia involved postmenopausal women with a condition called Genitourinary syndrome of menopause or GSMwhich is a condition caused by a decrease in estrogen. GSM can lead to vaginal dryness, burning, pain during sex, and urinary symptoms, Marmon wrote.

“Several studies suggest that red light therapy may improve GSM symptoms or measures of subjective well-being,” Marmon wrote. “However, most of the studies were small, did not have a placebo group or focused on urine penetration. The study did not show that red light improves sexual sensitivity, and it was not studied meaningfully in healthy women without GSM.”

There is limited research on red light therapy in this area, and there is no strong evidence that a toy like the Mona Spectra improves lubrication, muscle elasticity, or sexual sensitivity.
