Former DSA vice chair defends US Senate repeal platform
Former Democratic Socialists of America vice chairman Bhaskar Sunkara defends DSA’s growing influence with a strong platform, including calls to abolish the US Senate. Longtime CNN political commentator and Democrat Van Jones rebuked far-left activists on Saturday, warning that their positions on Hamas, prisons and immigration are backsliding and threatening to steer the Democratic Party in the wrong direction as the socialist-backed election celebrates its latest victory.
“Yes, we want our Democratic Party to be a big tent. But we don’t need ‘party poopers. So STOP pooping in the punch bowl – and tell us that turds are ice cubes,” Jones told X, referring to his Substack post.
Jones accused Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) activists of promoting positions involving Hamas, the police, prisons and immigration that he considers outside the progressive movement.

“But some people in groups like DSA are pushing an agenda FAR outside of those ideals. Supporting Hamas is not progress. ‘No police, no prisons, no borders’ is not sustainable. Celebrating the killing of Israeli civilians is not sustainable. These ideas are BACK,” said Jones.
Jones, a self-proclaimed progressive Democrat, outlined policies he considers important to that political presence.
“I’m a staunch Democrat, with a successful bipartisan record. I’m focused on progressive ideas and policies: criminal justice reform, the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, free education, clean air and water. These are the ideas I’ve fought for all my adult life,” said Jones.

A former administration adviser to former President Barack Obama also dismissed the argument that the far left was simply advocating the type of social democracy practiced in the Nordic countries.
“Some defend the far left by saying they only want Nordic democracy. If that were true, I might applaud them,” Jones said. “I want those goals too! But what does universal health care have to do with Hamas? By ending all law enforcement? By erasing all borders? By treating every rich person as a crook? Ideas matter. And these are bad ideas.”
DSA’s recently released Workers Deserve More campaign called for a shift in police funding to public services as a move to end the police and prisons. The plan also advocated abolishing the Department of Immigration and Enforcement, ending immigration detention and deportation, legalizing immigration and granting amnesty to immigrants regardless of their status.

The foreign policy component of the speech called for the end of all US military and economic aid to Israel and the establishment of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
The criticism of Jones came after Democratic Socialist Melat Kiros defeated Rep. Diana DeGette of 15 sisters in Colorado’s Democratic primary. In New York, DSA-backed candidates Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier won congressional primaries, while several federally endorsed candidates took state legislative nominations.
Jones acknowledged the organization’s push for the election in a previous Substack post.

“The Democratic Socialists of America are winning the election — and sending waves of joy and fear through the Democratic Party. A little historical context might be helpful,” Jones said.
Jones warned Saturday that mainstream Democrats frustrated with Republicans and the party’s establishment may ignore proposals he opposes.

“Right now, the extremists are trying to push back proposals from our party, hoping that Democrats are too frustrated with MAGA and the Democratic Party establishment. But we’re seeing it,” Jones said.
