US embassy issues travel advisory for Albania over tensions related to Iran threat

US officials have issued a travel advisory for the budget-friendly destination for European tourists famous for its Adriatic coast.
Tirana, Albania, is the subject of a travel advisory issued by the U.S. Embassy in Albania on April 1.
The embassy, located in Tirana, cited tensions related to Iran as the reason for the warning.

“Groups associated with Iran may want to target organizations associated with the US or the Iranian opposition in Albania,” the advisory said.
The ambassador warned that pro-Iranian forces could target populated areas such as “tourist areas, shopping malls, hotels, clubs and restaurants.”

“We encourage US citizens to exercise extreme caution,” the advisory said.
Officials also warned American visitors to be vigilant, stay aware of their surroundings and monitor local media for updates.

Visitors are urged to “review your security plans and keep your cell phone charged in case of an emergency,” the advisory added.
Tirana, the capital and largest city of Albania, is located about 20 kilometers from the Adriatic Sea and attracts tourists with its clear blue waters.

Tirana became the country’s capital in 1920, according to the Albanian foreign ministry website.

The city has undergone major changes since the fall of communism in the 1990s, emerging as a growing destination for international travelers.
Tourists often stop by Tirana’s Blloku district, once reserved for the communist elite, for cafes, restaurants and nightlife.

Albania’s foreign ministry website describes Tirana as “Albania’s main center for conventions, conferences and seminars.”
