Donald Trump had a disagreement with the Italian prime minister.

In fact, as you have heard, the whole country is angry with the president.

Giorgia Meloni responded harshly, accusing Trump of making up a story about him.

Trump said: “He begged me to take a picture with him. He wanted a picture with me so badly. I wouldn’t take it, but I felt sorry for him.”

“Donald Trump’s statements are completely fabricated,” said the prime minister, who was his colleague. “I’m clearly surprised. I don’t know why the president of the United States behaves like this to his allies: it’s not the first time, moreover…

“There is one thing he must remember: neither I nor Italy have ever begged him.”

The flap, which prompted Italy’s foreign minister to cancel a planned US visit, underscores how Trump’s policies, here and abroad, are driven by personal relationships.

TRUMP CONTINUES TO SHUT OFF ALLY MELONI, SAYS HE IS FAILING IN IRAN

What could be viewed as a harmless decoration managed to insult the entire country, and alienate several European leaders who supported the US.

After Trump’s deal with Iran, which was widely criticized by Republicans and Democrats for making too many concessions, he is taking the reins of another alliance with him.

An Israeli newspaper owned by millionaire Miriam Adelson criticized the president.

The headline: “You could have been the greatest president of all time, but you failed.”

At Israel Hayom, Danny Zaken wrote that Trump “may forever be remembered as the president who brought shame to America.”

He added: “You have made a huge mistake. You have failed to sign an agreement to hand over a deadly and brutal terrorist regime…

“We feel cheated, nothing less, because your heart seemed to be in the right place, with all your faults.”

Adelson, an Israeli-American physician, is the widow of casino magnate Sheldon Adelson. Trump awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2018, and he has donated large sums of money to pro-Trump groups and campaigns.

Trump is angry with Bibi Netanyahu for continuing to attack Lebanon, and he made sure that everyone knows it, with JD Vance joining in publicly scolding Israel. Netanyahu’s continued attacks on Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon prompted the mullahs to cancel a planned Friday deal with the vice president in Switzerland.

CONSERVATIVES ARLY AROUND TRUMP AFTER MEETING WITH ZELENSKYY WALKING OUT: ‘ABSOLUTE DUMBA–‘

Perhaps the most surprising, live confrontation with another foreign leader came last year when Trump introduced Volodymyr Zelenskyy, canceled their planned lunch and kicked him out of the White House. Zelenskyy, who had also been tutored by Vance, didn’t help matters by taking the bait and responding in a bitter way.

The president didn’t hold back much after that in helping Ukraine in the war against the invading Russians, although his strong relationship with Vladimir Putin may have been a factor. Trump and Zelenskyy have since mended their relationship, meeting at the G-7 summit in France.

Conversely, lobbying the president can also work. When Zohran Mamdani was running for mayor of New York, Trump repeatedly attacked her, threatening to withhold federal funds and send in federal troops if an Islamic socialist was elected.

DAVID MARCUS: Mr. MAMDANI GOES TO WASHINGTON BETWEEN A ROCK AND A STRONGER PLACE

He called Mamdani a “communist lunatic” who hates the police and Jewish people, and said “we will not destroy one of our major cities… We will eliminate crime in about 30 days.”

But when Mamdani arrived at the White House after the election, the tone was surprisingly positive.

“I met a very reasonable man. I met a man who wants to see – really wants to see – New York become great again,” Trump said. “I’ll be cheering him on.”

The president added:

“We agree more than I could have ever imagined that I want him to do a great job, and we’re going to help him do a great job.”

Mamdani, who once called Trump a “fascist” and a “depot,” also praised their conversation.

In the second meeting, the mayor introduced the president to a large housing project in Queens, where Trump grew up and Mamdani represented as an assemblyman.

Mamdani gave Trump a fake front page of the New York Daily News portraying the president as a master builder who could make a lasting difference in New York.

They have been arguing about many things but they have been texting each other quietly.

For Trump, there is no line between policy and personality. When he vowed to use the military if necessary to take over Greenland, an independent Danish territory, he threatened to impose a 10% tariff on goods from Denmark and seven other European countries that opposed the attempt. This was partly a result of the Danish prime minister insisting that he would not be arrested.

Regarding the dispute between Trump and Giorgia Meloni, both sides escalated their rhetoric over the weekend: The president wrote:

“He wouldn’t even allow us to use the landing strips in Italy or the runways, a huge disruption of operations, and this despite the fact that the US donates thousands of billions of dollars a year to the defense of Italy, and other ‘so-called’ NATO Allies. Now, after the United States defeated Iran militarily, he wants to be friends again to get his ‘numbers’. No thanks!!!”

TRUMP ‘RIGHT TO BE FURIOUS’ AT EUROPE’S ATTACK ON IRAN, SAYS THATCHER’S FORMER SHEPHERD

Meloni called the president’s attack “absurd,” saying: “As for my popularity, being your friend is of no use, and it doesn’t depend on my relationship with you… I suggest you focus on yours.”

It’s like a schoolyard fight where both fighters want the last word.

All politics, of course, open up relationships to some degree. When a candidate is seeking approval or a lawyer is courting his colleagues on a bill, the fallback method is definitely helpful.

But with Donald Trump, it’s a driving force in the way he does business, period, and those who upset or offend him soon learn that there are negative consequences.
