Totally unknown golfer Yurav Premlall emerged victorious at the DP World Tour event by 14 shots

Last week, DP World Tour golfer Yurav Premlall missed nine shots at the Turkish Airlines Open. It’s fast this Sunday, and his approach looks very different as the South African golfer took a 14-shot victory at the Catalunya Championship.

Golf is a fickle game, but the game that the 22-year-old put together in Spain to win his first European Tour is impressive on every level imaginable. We’re talking about a player who started the week without finishing in 30 in eight starts this season and is only one short of the greatest victory set by Tiger Woods at the 2000 US Open.

Premlall, who entered the event ranked number 598 in the Official World Golf Ranking, started the week with a 2-under round of 70 on Thursday. Which is more than respectable considering he’s missed four of eight cuts this season, but that still leaves him six shots back with 54 holes to play.

Then came Friday, when Premlall seemed to wake up a completely new man.

He posted a second-round 64, then followed it up with a 63 on Saturday to enter Sunday’s final round five shots clear of the chasing pack.

Any player, especially one who has yet to find the winner’s circle, can sign up for a five-shot cushion of 18 holes to play. However, it’s also a unique place that many players have never seen at the professional level. So while many would have expected Premlall to take a small step back and spice things up on Sunday, that didn’t happen.

The South African birdied six of his opening nine holes, picked up four more birdies, and was able to post his second consecutive round of 63 to secure an impressive 14-shot victory at 28-under par.

“There are no words,” Premlall said after getting the win. “I worked hard to get into this position and I’m happy to finally see the results of it. I mean, the last eight, nine months have been a struggle to build myself on a platform where I know I can give myself a chance to win and clearly keep this position. I’m very grateful, so it’s a dream come true.”

With his back-to-back rounds of 9-under throughout the weekend, Premlall could have skipped the first two rounds of the tournament and still won by four shots.

Fellow South African Shaun Norris finished in second place alone.
