The striker who leads League One in shots is now being chased by Derby and Millwall

Derby County and Millwall could meet in the Championship play-offs in the coming weeks, with the two promotion runners-up set to do battle in the summer transfer window.

The final day of the EFL season sees three-way battles for the final promotion places in both League One and the Championship.

  • Ipswich remain a point behind in the race to join champions Coventry in the Premier League thanks to a draw at Southampton on Tuesday. A win over QPR will seal the deal.

  • Millwall face Oxford who are just one point behind but on goal difference which means they have to win and hope Ipswich drop the points. Middlesbrough, two points and five goals back in fourth, will need a win at Wrexham to match City’s loss.

  • Tuesday’s result knocked the Saints out of the play-offs, where the final spot is a three-way tie. Holders Wrexham are level on 70 points with Hull and are ahead on goal difference, but have conceded one less. If all three figures finish level, the Tigers – who host Norwich – hold the head-to-head breaker.

  • Derby are a point behind in eighth place but have a better goal difference than the two teams ahead of them. The Rams face Sheffield United who need to improve on both teams’ results – meaning a win for Wrexham or Hull will end their hopes.

The Rams have exceeded expectations under John Eustace, who arrived with the aim of ending the threat of relegation given the club’s financial problems.

If they are to enter the play-offs, they will have to do so without striker Patrick Agyemang, who is seriously injured and will remain until after the World Cup.

And with the American player’s absence likely to be felt next season, the club is now planning to replace him with a successful player in the lower division.

Derby and Millwall join the Tolaj transfer race

Indeed, according to Pete O’Rourke, Plymouth Argyle striker, Laurent Tolaj is now being targeted by several second division sides, including Derby and Millwall.

Plymouth are in the same position as Derby, needing a win and help from elsewhere to secure a place in League One’s top six on the final day.

If they miss out, there will be a huge battle to sign Tolaj, the striker who leads all players in the division in shots per game this season, who has registered 16 goals and seven assists.

Signed for a whopping £1.2m last summer, Tom Cleverley hailed the Swiss star’s rise as “monumental”.

Tolaj, a former Swiss youth international, came through Brighton’s youth ranks, but was loaned out several times before being loaned out entirely to Aldershot and Port Vale.

Argyle fans are desperate not to lose the player – which speaks volumes for his quality – and are furiously flocking to renew O’Rourke demanding huge sums from any interested suitors.

Derby are also looking to lure American midfielder Sebastian Berhalter.
