The new Dyson Supersonic Travel is the cheapest Supersonic yet

Content

About three years ago, I questioned whether the (then) $429 Dyson Supersonic was still worth the price of entry.

These days, as the Supersonic line has expanded, the standard model has gone up in price to $449.99, and the most expensive version of the hair dryer comes in at $549.99, a question that feels even more reasonable.

The good news? If you don’t mind spending nearly $500 on a hair dryer, Dyson just announced the Dyson Supersonic Travel, a $299.99 model of its popular hair tool. In addition to its low price point, it comes with travel-friendly dimensions and features.

As someone who has personally tested Supersonics (and many dupes), I’ve taken a closer look at Dyson’s latest beauty launch to gather everything you need to know.

Dyson Supersonic Travel design difference

In short, the Supersonic Travel is a regular Supersonic but smaller. According to Dyson, that comes out to 32 percent smaller and 25 percent lighter than the OG Supersonic. In other words, it’s 0.7 pounds for the standard Supersonic’s 1.8 pounds, and 8.7 inches long for the larger 10-inch models.

This model also comes with a single attachment, style concentrator, a la the now defunct Dyson Supersonic Origin (cost $399.99). By comparison, the $449.99 Supersonic comes with three attachments: a styling concentrator, a diffuser, and a wide-tooth comb. For all five attachments, you will have to shell out $549.99.

The same attachment can be used between the Travel, original, and Supersonic Nural dryers. This means that choosing Travel can technically save you money – each attachment ranges from $19.99 to $44.99. If you only use the styling concentrator and diffuser, for example, the total cost of the Travel dryer with additional attachments would come out to $344.98, making it more than $100 cheaper than the original Supersonic with three attachments.

Supersonic Travel is very flexible in some ways, and less so in others

Functionality wise, the Supersonic Travel is a slightly different product from the other Supersonics in the line. It has a power ranging from 1,000 to 1,220 and an air flow speed of 11.6 liters per second, compared to 1,600 watts and 13.3 liters per second of the standard Supersonic. In other words, a bigger dryer is more powerful, so it wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect longer dry times.

The standard Supersonic and Supersonic Nural also have four heaters and three air speeds, while the Supersonic Travel includes three heaters and two air speeds.

That said, the Supersonic Travel has universal voltage compatibility, so it can be used from 100 to 240 volts, while other Supersonics are locked to 120 volt compatibility.

As for its portability, it’s also worth noting that the Supersonic Travel weighs the same as the Supersonic r, a high-end hair dryer ($549.99) that’s popular in part for being lightweight and easy to operate.

Where to buy Dyson Supersonic Travel

The Dyson Supersonic Travel is available for $299.99 on Dyson’s website, Amazon, and Best Buy. When you shop first, you’ll get a $59.99 travel bag that includes a hair dryer.
