The Internet is mourning Sam Neill, the beloved actor of ‘Jurassic Park’

Legendary actor Sam Neill has died aged 78, and tributes are pouring in on the internet.

Born in Northern Ireland, raised in New Zealand, Neill’s film and TV career saw him unite generations of fans over five decades of performances spanning. Jurassic Park, The piano, The Peaky Blinders, My Creative Work, Dead Calm, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, The Hunt for Red Octoberagain Event Horizon.

A statement posted on Neill’s Instagram page said the actor died in Sydney, Australia, on Monday, “surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that characterized his entire life.”

In 2023, Neil underwent chemotherapy for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. In April 2026, he revealed that he was cancer free.

“The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed that Sam remained cancer free,” read a post on Neill’s Instagram. “The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their wonderful care. More details will be shared in due course, but in the meantime, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they deal with this immeasurable loss.”

Tributes have started pouring in online from Neill’s famous friends and fans.

Richard E. Grant, who knew Neill for 30 years and worked with him in 2019 Palm Beachposted a set of personal photos on Instragram, writing, “An officer and a Gentleman in the truest sense. He guided and helped me through the most difficult time in my life…Sail on, kind Sir.”

Colin Trevorrow, who directed Neill to Jurassic World Dominiondescribed the actor in a tribute post as “a man with a deep and beautiful soul…It’s not every moment in life that you get to be friends with a legend.”

New Zealand’s former prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, wrote on Instagram, “A few weeks ago I had the great pleasure of sitting down with Sam Neill, talking about life, politics, and home. He was thoughtful, curious, and honorable. A man of principles, not afraid to speak up, and willing to fight when he saw injustice.”

New Zealand’s current prime minister Christopher Luxon, meanwhile, called Neill “one of the pioneers” of his X position.

Fellow actor Alan Cumming wrote on Instagram, “Ahhh Sam, what a brilliant man. You are missed. Sorry to the family for your great loss.”

Officer The Peaky Blinders The Instagram page posted a tribute to Neill, who played Inspector Chester Campbell in Seasons 1 and 2 of the series. “Chester Campbell’s portrait of Sam is one for the ages,” it reads. “A despicable, worthless, manipulative villain, but also lovable, vulnerable, funny, and a lot of fun to watch. Sam was one of the key strengths he found The Peaky Blinders it’s off to a good start, for which we will be forever grateful.”

Fans shared their posts to pay tribute to Neill.

Many have also been re-sharing Neill’s viral post from 2019, which shows the actor giving advice on smart living.
