Born out of College Humor, Dropout is a comedy streaming platform with a wide variety of comedies in its library, including Crowd Control, Dirty WatchMake some noise, again Smartypants. However, the three pillars of a successful TV studio Dimension 20, Game Changer, again Most Important People.
As Dropout grows in that CEO and Changing the game host Sam Reich calls it a “tough teenage years,” these three very different shows made huge strides in pop culture’s popularity and timing.
Quitting-curiosity? Here’s where you should start looking.
In separate interviews with Reich, Dimension 20 creator Brennan Lee Mulligan, and Most Important People host Vic Michaelis, Mashable revealed the infamous beginnings and defining moments of these games, as Dropout approaches its next steps.

One of the first programs that Dropout started on its launch date in September 2018, Dimension 20 it was first released in a news space that Mulligan said was meant to get short-term attention. But the former College Humor writer/actor created an unscripted long-format show with hour-long episodes of stand-up comedians Pits & Dragons. This dice roll was a critical success in Dropout.
Hosted by Mulligan as Game Master, Dimension 20′first season, Fantasy Highit used D&D engineering and a setting inspired by the comics of John Hughes. I “brave warriors” (as the main stars of the show will be known) have created characters that combine the categories of fantasy sports and racing with the archetypes of youth films. And so was born an angry Tiefling bard with daddy issues, a wisecracking half-orc barbarian, a proud half-elf jock, and a high elf witch, whose greatest enemy is her older girl sister.
Defying conventional wisdom in the media landscape of the time, Dropout subscribers flocked to the show, fighting back. Changing the game in the most viewed series on the platform. Since the first episode of Dimension 20 aired in 2018, it has grown to 28 seasons, featuring dozens of comedians, as well as drag queens (Pits and Drag Queens), and professional wrestlers (The descent of the Titan).
Mulligan and his band also took their show on the road, playing venues such as the Austin Convention Center (Fantasy High LIVE at RTX), the Hollywood Bowl (Battle at the Bowl), and a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden (Gauntlet in the Garden).
Asked about D20Like Mulligan, he said the idea of a “silver bullet” or “unique idea” that guarantees success is “malarkey.” He concluded, “Everything good in life comes from the invisible contribution of a thousand or a million people who give care and consideration. And I think that’s very true Dimension 20. Dimension 20if it has a secret sauce, it’s that we work with a lot of great people who try hard.”
Game changer: A meta game about game shows

Where Mulligan rules size 20, Reich is an excellent host Changing the gamewhere each week the game itself surprises the competing comedians.
Sometimes it’s a puzzle based around a prop, like a lie detector or a giant foam mouth. Maybe it will be a parody of an existing show, like him Survivor, The Bachelor, Traitors, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, or Shark Tank. Some concepts seem so successful that they spawn into their own shows, such as Make some noise, dirty laundry, again Crowd Control.
Season 7 delved into more meta humor, with episodes like “Fool’s Gold.” Here, Reich challenged a team of three comedians to bid on social media video groups, Shark Tank style. The goal was to see whose videos would get the most views in one month. Besides being a funny idea of an episode that gave many Dropout comedians who took their stupidity on the streets and in chiropractic offices, this episode was a good marketing strategy, considering that – according to Reich – 75-90% of new subscribers come through social media marketing. However, there were doubts from Changing the game the team behind “Fool’s Gold.”
Mashable Trend Report
“I remember there was a debate at the beginning in the writers’ room,” Reich said, “We’re just like, can we really do this episode? It seems like we’re boiling the Marketing Dropout down to its ridiculous, ridiculous version. Like, if you turn Marketing Dropout into a game, this is a game. It’s like, are these other platforms starting to pop up on social media more? We were just like, this thing is great, if you will.

Chief among this “gold” was Katie Marovitch’s parody of Daffy size 20, “Size 20: On the Bus,” and Michaelis’ voiceover for the video where Mulligan says he’s leaving Dropout to become a shoe repairman for American Girl Dolls. In a previous Mashable interview for Say MoreMichaelis said of their pitch that the secret of the virtual internet is: “You take the thing that people love the most and the thing that they fear the most.”
The “Brennan resigns” video was released as the episode aired on Dropout. He said to those who did not watch Changing the game live can be mistaken for sincere. And Mulligan says many did.
“I had family members texting me, asking me if everything was okay,” he explained, adding, “There were emergency meetings in some parts of the world and in the entertainment industry based on people who believed that the video was real.
Reich pointed out that there was considerable debate about when the social media clips were released. “How do we market this episode? One way we can do it is to release all these clips before the episode airs, and then the episode becomes a milestone,” he said. “One way we can do it is how we do it [releasing the clips as they played in the episode]. And the third way to do it is to follow our standard marketing tactics, which is we release an episode, and we release clips in the two weeks following that episode. “
Breaking away from their marketing convention, they went with the drop during the episode, hoping for a bigger impact. And Reich said, “The social response has been explosive.” With over 3 million views on it TikTok,Mulligan’s hilarious resignation became such an internet sensation that it inspired a Google Easter egg. As for Marovitch’s spin size 20, his spoof became the highest-rated series on IMDb, despite not being an original episode of the series.
Reflecting on the success of these two videos in particular, Reich pointed out, “I wasn’t sure that the pieces that were like us who love our scent would do so well. When, in fact, the opposite happened. The fans who left the floor gathered so hard around those who were meta that the opposite happened. [their attention] there’s this, that’s growing, then other people want to get in on the joke.”
Reich continued, “And doing this so far, all this ends up being D20 On the bus [Season 2] on April Fool’s Day, where we did a full one-hour campaign. And that episode of D20 it’s disturbingly close to being a very effective episode Dimension 20 for all time. We’re all looking at, have we gone too far here?”
