The Calgary Flames Coaching Search and Rebuild Will Continue

Notes on the coaching search for the Kings, Oilers, and Maple Leafs

NHL rumor mill: Darren Dreger on Barn Burner on the LA Kings and Edmonton Oilers: “On these veteran teams like LA and Edmonton, Craig Berube and Peter Laviolette are on their radar; the closest type of coach.”

NHL Watcher: Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts: The Podcast on the Toronto Maple Leafs coach search: “I think Malhotra, a legitimate candidate, I think Woodcroft, a potential candidate, I think if David Carle wanted to talk to them, I think he would be a candidate.”

Eric Stephens: Anaheim Ducks GM Pat Verbeek on behalf of Jay Woodcroft to open some coaching vacancies: “I will never hold a coach to a coaching job.

NHL Rumors: NY Rangers, John Carlson, and Offseason NHL Trade Tiers

The Calgary Flames have many players and contracts to go in order to continue their rebuild

Anthony Di Marco of the Daily Faceoff: The Calgary Flames moved on from big assets at the trade deadline – Rasmus Andersson, MacKenzie Weegar and Nazem Kadri – and saved for the future. They added the first two seconds, and the fifth (three with conditions attached).

Sources say the Flames aren’t done yet and are open to more moves. “They’re open to (moving) any guys except for (goalie) Dustin Wolf, (forwards) Matvei Gridin and Matt Coronato and defenseman Zayne Parekh.”

Forward Blake Coleman has one year left at $4.9 million and a 10-team draft pick. You will get interest from competing teams.

Forward Yegor Sharangovich carries a cap hit of $5.75 million in 2030. He put up just 29 points last season in 79 games and was relegated to the fourth line. He has a 10-team no-trade list. You won’t get much return.

Morgan Frost has a $4.375 million cap hit through 2027 and eight team roster spots. He had 22 goals and 21 assists last season. He can play center and could be a valuable trade chip. He will make sense with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and not having Brad Treliving as their GM could help the sides make a deal.

Connor Zary has two years at $3.77 million. I only put up 27 points last year, and there could be some unhappiness on both sides. Can play wing and position. The Montreal Canadiens take chances on players like these.

Maple Leafs Coaching Candidates, and All-Star Trade Candidates

Joel Farabee has two years left at $5 million. He could be a middle-six player for other teams, but he may not bring a huge return. A team like the Tampa Bay Lightning could use versatility.

It is unlikely that the Flames will be able to move Jonathan Huberdeau’s contract. Forward Ryan Strome and defenseman Zach Whitecloud may be more valuable to the Flames than on the trade market.
