The Brighton star could join Man Utd after Ederson agreed personal terms

Man United’s rebuilding of the stadium has taken a major step forward this summer following the completion of a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson.

The Brazilian arrived after establishing himself as one of Serie A’s most consistent midfielders and is expected to play a key role in Michael Carrick’s plans next season.

United have spent much of the last few months exploring ways to add more athleticism, strength and technical quality to the center of the pitch, amid links with a host of world-class midfielders, and Ederson’s arrival represents a significant statement of intent.

The 26-year-old comes as the direct replacement for Casemiro, who bid farewell to Old Trafford after a fine last campaign in Manchester.

However, the work may not be finished there.

United are expected to be very busy in the summer transfer window.

Despite acquiring one new midfielder, reports continue to suggest that United remain open to adding further reinforcements in the middle of the park.

Southampton’s Mateus Fernandes has been linked in recent weeks, while Brighton star Carlos Baleba has re-emerged as a strong player on the club’s radar.

Carlos Baleba is Man Utd’s ‘concrete choice’ after Ederson

Speaking on the GiveMeSport Market Madness podcast, journalist Ben Jacobs revealed that United’s interest in the Brighton midfielder remains after last year’s £75m saga.

A TalkSPORT reporter explains that the Red Devils already have terms for the player after agreeing terms with them last year, and the 22-year-old is being eyed by Carrick’s side as they look to add another midfielder.

“I think we need to look closely at Mateus Fernandes or Carlos Baleba, because they are both strong teams in Manchester United,” said Jacobs.

“Brighton have not mentioned the price, last summer Man United were willing to pay around £75 million.

“This summer, if they go there, they will be looking for a lower number than that because Baleba does not have fixed seasons.

“The goals are already there for the player, because they were put there last summer.”

That last point is arguably the biggest step taken in the review.

The transfer saga often depends on personal terms, especially when clubs are competing for top players. If Jacobs’ information is accurate, United will already have a significant part of the process completed if they decide to do it again.

Rather than starting new negotiations with the player, the outline of a possible deal is reportedly already in place from talks held in 2025.

That could be a significant advantage if interest in Baleba heats up in the coming weeks, especially with reported interest from rivals Tottenham.

The Brighton midfielder has long been regarded as one of the most talented young players in the Premier League. Since arriving at Lille, he has shown the physical qualities, ball handling and defensive qualities that have made him an attractive target for several top clubs.

However, Jacobs also highlighted an important aspect about moderation.

Although United were reportedly willing to spend around £75m on Baleba last summer, it will be interesting to see how much they will pay him now.

For United, that uncertainty can work both ways.

On the other hand, it leaves room for negotiation. On the other hand, Brighton have no obvious pressure to sell and have traditionally been tough negotiators against Premier League rivals.

What is clear is that Baleba is still under strict scrutiny.

Ederson may already be on the way, but United’s midfield overhaul could be extended.

With Mateus Fernandes and Baleba both described by Jacobs as viable options, the club are clearly continuing to look for ways to strengthen one of the most important areas in Carrick’s squad.
