Here’s a look at the medal tally for the 2026 Winter Olympics, co-hosted by the cities of Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo in northern Italy and wrapped up Sunday, Feb. 22.
Total medal count for the 2026 Winter Olympics
Norway finished the Games with a record 41 medals, including 18 gold – gold medals too won at any one Winter Olympics.
Team USA followed with 33 medals, 12 of which were gold. The US surpassed its previous showing of 10 gold medals dating back to the 2002 Salt Lake City Games. The last one came on the last day of the competition where i The US men’s hockey team beat Canada in a thrilling overtime victory.

On February 10, Ben Ogden became the first American man to win an Olympic medal in figure skating since 1976, to find silver in a running race. Alex Hall won silver in freestyle skiing, while Jackie Wiles and Paula Moltzan won bronze in the team downhill event. Team USA scored a gold medal in mixed doubles curling, but fell short against Sweden and will take home silver.
February 11, skier Elizabeth Lemley took gold in moguls and star speedskating Jordan Stolz he won gold in the 1,000 meters, setting an Olympic record in the process. An ice dancing duo Madison Chock and Evan Bates he got the silver after narrowly missing out on the top spot.
February 12 they brought silver snowboarder Chloe Kim in halfpipe and cross country bronze skier Jessie Diggins.
On Feb. 14, Jalein Kauf and Elizabeth Lemley added silver and bronze for Team USA, respectively, in the women’s double moguls. In speedskating, Stolz won his own second gold medal and set his second Olympic record of the Games when he won the 500 meters. He is the first American since 1980 to win multiple speedskating gold medals.
The start of Week 2 brought gold to the American bobsledder Elana Myers Taylorthe 41-year-old Olympian who already has three silver and two bronze medals to his name.
On Feb. 17, the US earned two more silver medals, while Mac Forehand just missed out on gold in freeski big air and Team USA fell to Italy in an upset in the team speedskating pursuit.
Skier Mikaela Shiffrin won gold in the women’s slalom on Feb. 18, breaking his streak of eight events without a medal.
The next day, i US women’s ice hockey team planned to come back to beat rival Canada for gold in overtime; Alysa Liu won gold in women’s figure skating, first in the US since 2002; and sprinter Jordan Stolz won his third medal, silver.
On Feb. 21, Kaila Kuhn, Connor Curran and Chris Lillis took the title in the freestyle skiing mixed aerials, in the process breaking the US record for most national gold in a single Winter Games.
On the last day of the competition, the US The men’s hockey team took home the gold in a thrilling 2-1 overtime win over Canada. It was the team’s first gold medal since the “Miracle on Ice” over the Soviet Union at the 1980 Lake Placid Games.
South American History Medal
Brazilian skier Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, who has a strong final race in the Olympic giant slalom, she won gold and won South America’s first ever Winter Games medal.
Pinheiro Braathen, who comes from a family where his mother is Brazilian and his father is Norwegian, represented Norway until 2023 when he suddenly retired. He returned to the sport in 2024, representing Brazil and since then he has achieved many “firsts” with his new country: the first Brazilian Alpine runner to finish on the World Cup stage last year and the first World Cup win for this country this season.
Winter Olympics gold medal records have been set
The Norwegian team broke theirs gold medal record in one Winter Olympics when Johannes Dale-Skjevdal scored all 20 of his points in the first 15km mass race and skated to gold on Feb. 20. It was Norway’s 17th gold medal Milano Cortina Winter Games.
Meanwhile, Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo of Norway became the second most decorated gold medalist in Olympic history after American Michael Phelps. The 29-year-old entered the Games with five gold medals and added six more to his tally.
With six gold medals, Klaebo broke a nearly 50-year-old record set by speed skater Eric Heiden, who won five golds at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics. However, all of Heiden’s wins were in individual races and Klaebo’s two came in team events, so Heiden’s record for individual wins still stands.
Klaebo is also the Winter Olympian with the most gold medals in history. Norwegian teammates Marit Bjoergen and Bjorn Daehlie in cross-country skiing and Ole Einar Bjoerndalen in biathlon hold the previous record with eight Winter Olympic gold medals. They are all retired.
Meanwhile, Team USA broke its record with its 11th gold medal on February 21, adding a 12th on the final day of competition.
What was the number of medals in the 2022 Winter Olympics?

Who has the most Olympic medals?
Although the International Olympic Committee does not compile standards, the Olympic Foundation for Culture and Heritage keeps track of the number of medals. One medal is counted for placing first, second or third in an event regardless of the number of athletes on the team.
In the total medal count for all previous Summer and Winter Games, the US leads the way with 3,103 medals.
The US is trailed in the medal count by the former Soviet Union, which earned 1,204 medals before its breakup in 1991. Germany is third with 1,091 medals.
The US also won the most gold medals, with 1,220 in the previous games, according to the Olympic Foundation.
But when it comes to Winter Olympics history alone, the US sinks to second place in the number of medals behind Norway, the perennial winter sports arena.
Norwegian athletes took home a total of 404 medals at the last Winter Games. The US has won with 330, while Germany is in third place with 286.
