Putin condemns the US-Israeli assassination of Iran’s Khamenei in an official letter

Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on Sunday, calling the incident, which came amid Israeli and US strikes, an “unconscionable violation” of norms.

Putin made this statement in a letter he wrote to Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian that the Kremlin released to the public after Khamenei’s death. Saturday’s midday strikes killed Khamenei and other top Iranian leaders, including the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.

“Please accept my deepest condolences regarding the killing of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Seyed Ali Khamenei, and members of his family, which was carried out in a senseless violation of all norms of human behavior and international law,” Putin wrote.

“In our country, Ayatollah Khamenei will be remembered as an outstanding politician who played a major role in developing Russian-Iranian friendly relations and bringing them to the level of full partnership,” Putin continued.

“I ask you to convey my deepest sympathy and support to the family and friends of the Supreme Leader, the government and all the people of Iran,” he added.

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir-Saeid Iravani, condemned the joint US-Israeli attack that hit his country throughout Saturday during a meeting of the UN Security Council.

Iravani accused the US of undermining its alleged pursuit of international stability while attacking the sovereign state for its “domestic” activities.
