Old Trafford victim “the new Ronaldo” must not play for Man Utd again

Manchester United have been locked in a relegation battle since Sir Alex Ferguson took over in 1986 and fought tooth and nail for years to bring Old Trafford to the top of English and European football.

The difference in the last 13 years is that Sir Alex is no longer in the scheme, and Man United have not won the Premier League or the Champions League due to the retirement of the Scottish legend.

Credited with spearheading one of the school’s most successful football careers, welcoming the “Class of ’92” into first-team life, the Red Devils have at least maintained their connection to Carrington and their roots over the past decade.

However, it remains to be seen who exactly will be the next local star.

Man Utd academy’s greatest talents

It’s hard to argue with Kobbie Mainoo as the biggest winner in this post-Ruben Amorim world at Manchester United. The England international was banned during the former United manager’s tenure, but Michael Carrick has given him a new lease of life.

Mainoo is, of course, only 20 years old, but his athleticism and technical ability in midfield and United’s constant midfield struggles have raised many questions about the Portuguese’s refusal to give him minutes.

Now thriving, Mainoo is a reminder that there is such quality beneath Man United, and the combination of top prospects could prove the difference in the coming months and years.

JJ Gabriel is only 15 years old, but he’s already being billed as the next big thing in Carrington. Expect to hear his name a lot in the next few years. Of course, the line-up doesn’t end there, and there are others, such as Shea Lacey, 18, who have played for the senior team and could fit into Carrick’s plans in the final months of the season.

However, being a talented young player does not give you a free pass at Old Trafford. These young players must fight hard, maybe even more.

Everyone will be dreaming of becoming the next Man United player Cristiano Ronaldo, but there is one person who has felt in the academy in particular that stands as proof that that does not mean you have found the place of a lifetime.

The new Ronaldo must not play for Man Utd again

Ronaldo is arguably the greatest footballer of all time, and won his first Ballon d’Or under Ferguson’s wing at Manchester United.

The club has searched and searched, but could not find their new CR7. However, Marcus Rashford was being linked with a role for the Portuguese legend. Rene Meulensteen, a former academy coach at Old Trafford, once suggested that Rashford has the skills and personality to be “the next Ronaldo”, although he admits the legendary striker is a “one-off” talent.

Rashford looked like a prodigy in his formative years, almost a decade ago now. He was wearing the pieces of a goal-scoring defender. He was direct and always dangerous, and he managed Ronaldo in his first Premier League.

But the Three Lions star fell out of favor at the start of Amorim’s reign and was unable to return to the reckoning. In fairness, criticism of Rashford’s appeal has been made in recent years, and there is no doubt that consistency has not been the 28-year-old’s friend.

Now on loan at Barcelona (after a loan spell with Aston Villa for the last half of 2024/25), there is no turning back for Rashford, as he has impressed in Catalonia, with ten goals and 13 assists to his name this term.

In La Liga, for example, he completes only 32% of attempted dribbles, an average of 0.9 per game. With such speed and fleet footwork, this should be high, because good wing play is about more than just scoring goals and making assists.

While the club need more attacking depth, they should sell Rashford this summer and sign new players, perhaps giving more opportunities to the likes of Lacey while they are available. In that case, Rashford should have played his last game for the club.

Rashford enjoyed great moments in a Manchester United shirt: two goals in his first game against Midtjylland, the next against Arsenal; that free-kick against Chelsea. He won silver and played many games. At times, he was a “scoring machine”, as noted by journalist Mazola J. Molefe, but this did not last.

Perhaps at his best under Ole Gunnar Solskjær, the England star is no longer a solution at the Theater of Dreams.

But Rashford bounced and flowed, and never reached the Ronaldo-esque level his natural ability suggested he could achieve.

He is part of the old era at Old Trafford, and to allow him to return would be to repeat the old mistakes that have put this club in purgatory for far too long.
