Nottingham Forest are set to offer Neco Williams a new contract to fend off Newcastle and Tottenham

Newcastle United are keen on a move for Nottingham Forest star Neco Williams, who are determined to keep the Wales international amid growing interest.

It is no surprise that Tricky Trees are keen to keep Williams, as he was one of the most important players last season, making 53 appearances in all competitions, as they reached the semi-finals of the Europa League.

At the start of the campaign, commentator Jamie Martin made it clear that he was impressed with the development of the defender, saying: “You want to give credit to Neco Williams; the runs below to support CHO, and then there’s the amazing tracking actions, which are great. He works hard. He’s come a long way, it all shows his level of work.”

The Welshman showed his attacking qualities by picking up two goals and three assists in the Premier League, where he was seen as a left-back, although he is also comfortable playing on the right.

Newcastle may need to sign a left-back this summer, with Matt Targett joining newly promoted Hull City, and there are signs the Forest full-back could push Lewis Hall for the starting spot.

With the 25-year-old Hall excelling in many key metrics, many Premier League clubs may now be vying for his signature.

According to a report by Football Insider, Newcastle have joined the race to sign Williams, as they like his ability to play on both sides of the defence.

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are also in the picture to sign the Wales international, but Forest are trying to get hold of him, entering into negotiations to offer him a new contract.

Given his versatility, the former Liverpool man could challenge for Tino Livramento’s place at right-back, with Wolverhampton Wanderers signing Kieran Trippier still needed.

Newcastle have also stepped up their pursuit of Johan Manzambi’s alternative

Following the departure of Sandro Tonali, it will be important for Eddie Howe’s side to sign a new midfielder this summer, but they will miss out on Aston Villa signing Johan Manzambi.

The Magpies have already tabled a bid for Tottenham Hotspur winger Lucas Bergvall, but could be set to make an improved offer for the Sweden international, who is worth around £50m.

Of course, Williams’ versatility would make him a solid option for Howe, but it would be crucial to sign a new midfielder, with Guimaraes’ future in doubt, and at just 20 years old, Bergvall could be an exciting long-term addition to the squad.
