Irfaan Gaffar: “There’s a goalie situation going on with the Winnipeg Jets and Connor Hellebuyck. Now, the team is waiting. Are the Jets persuading him to stay? Have they done enough to convince him to want to stay? Where are we with Connor Hellebuyck right now?”
Pagnotta: “Yes, I mean, look, Cole Perfetti wants to know. He talked about it yesterday, where you know his introductory press conference about his new contract, not an introduction, but an official press conference about his new contract, admitting that ‘Hey, like everyone else, he wants to know what’s going on with his goalkeeper.’
Could a Kirill Marchenko trade happen soon? Connor Bedard was never interested in the offer sheet
By all indications, there is still a reluctant willingness to have those discussions with other groups on the Winnipeg side. I mean, if something was close, you probably know it’s done by now. But you know, the Jets were tight-lipped about what they would want if they released him.
And I think somebody knows that part of what they’re trying to do is convince him to at least give this one more go. Like last year it was an anomaly. We are completing the list. We find out, we have a kid that we’re eight times higher than (Viggo Bjorck). We are still looking to bring in another player who is now locked in to Perfetti. We have two strong lines that can do damage. We feel that we have strengthened our defense a little bit. Obviously he’s bringing Mario Ferraro. Let’s see if we can get back on track.
I think that’s a preference, obviously, from the Jets to not move the former Vezina winner and Hart. But I still think there is an opening for those discussions because obviously the player knows, he would like them to do that.
I think at the end of the day, when he goes back to camp, he’s a professional. You will, you will, they will face it again, and it’s water under the bridge for now.
But I still believe, you know, talking to people on the team and around the league that if the right deal (Jets GM Kevin) Cheveldayoff and company can get, they can explore that and move forward with it. But obviously we’re here on July or the 22nd, and we’re still waiting.”
Gaffar: “And I think we’re still going to wait. I think this is a similar situation to Dylan Larkin that will probably come to training camp.
NHL Rumors: Penguins, Canucks, and Rangers
But I think this is a situation where you’re going to look at it, and maybe at some point you’re going to see a statement from Connor Hellebuyck that says, ‘I’m a Winnipeg Jet, and I don’t want this to be a distraction anymore. That’s where I am. This is it.’
Because you can’t go to training camp with these question marks. Like Dylan Larkin not being able to go to training camp with question marks. It always happens when you want to fix these things before you know that a big media event is going to happen before the season starts.”
