Sunderland are opening talks to sign their version of Alexander Isak this summer

Sunderland have been in excellent form this season, and their win over Leeds United on Tuesday evening saw Regis Le Bris’ side move to 40 points in the Premier League.

Although the Black Cats spent a lot of money after being promoted to the top flight last year, they are not part of that. The difference, however, is that most clothes fall to the floor after receiving large sums of money, and this was not the case.

Now in a strong and stable position, Sunderland are likely to be playing Premier League football next season, and that could see them bring in some quality players to stand alongside Granit Xhaka, Enzo Le Fee, Robin Roefs and more.

However, Brian Brobbey has been absent from his striker’s squad for the past two games, and his presence is lacking.

Sunderland are in talks to sign a new striker

Eliezer Mayenda and Wilson Isidor came in ninth a few weeks ago. The former struck for Bournemouth, but his passing and eagerness left something to be desired. Isidor, while in focus, has scored just four goals in 26 games.

If Sunderland are to go into the next break and build for next season, this should be one of Kyril Louis-Dreyfus’ priorities at the end of the season.

Yes, according to TEAMtalk, the Wearsiders are among the players being kept in the loop about the status of Juventus striker Jonathan David, who will be allowed to leave the Allianz Stadium if the Old Lady can find a replacement.

The Canadian, 26, left Lille at the end of his contract last year and joined the Italians on a free transfer. However, he is still unsettled, and a number of Premier League clubs have registered their interest, with the striker revealing in 2022 that he wants to play in the English top flight, which he believes is the best in the world, “one day”.

What Jonathan David would bring to Sunderland

Sunderland have a very good squad, but perhaps lack a top-class goalscorer. In David, they will find someone with the potential to score so many goals throughout the campaign, and in that, he could be their version of Alexander Isak.

Isak is no longer playing for Newcastle United, he has signed for Liverpool for a British record fee of £125m. But he is arguably one of the best goalscorers in Europe, and the Magpies’ slump this season could be a by-product of that summer sale.

For David, it was a slow start to life in Italy. But he is still strong; having scored just one goal in the first four months of the Serie A season, the Canadian defender has four goals and three assists in his last 11 outings.

There are several stylistic similarities between the two leading contenders. His international team-mate, Jonathan Osorio, hailed him as a “star” for his efforts in France, and a return of 109 goals and 31 assists in just 232 games for France led to further praise from Canadian football expert Tony Marinaro, who described him as “one of the best strikers in the world”.

In addition, his link-up game is on par with the Swedish striker. Last season in Ligue 1, he created eight big chances, completing 83% of his passes and 50% of his dribbles.

David has a good record in front of goal. If Sunderland can get him to dance to Le Bris’s song and emulate one of the club’s former rivals in Isak, it would be great for a long-term project.

Isak is, after all, one of the best strikers in the business, and this will show a real statement of intent, lifting Sunderland to the top and ensuring they are more than just a one-hit wonder in the big time.

Ultimately, David will have his options this summer, but Sunderland have shown that they have created a balanced and progressive outfit that can be beneficial to all parties involved.
