NC professor Chris Schulte fired for calling Charlie Kirk racist on audio recording

A North Carolina college professor and former State House candidate has been fired from his job after he was filmed calling Charlie Kirk a “piece of s—” last week.
Chris Schulte had taught psychology at Coastal Carolina Community College since 2008, but was fired Thursday after a student recorded an audio rant against Kirk and Turning Point USA.
“Did he deserve to die? No. But he was a racist. And Turning Point USA is part of a racist s— organization,” Schulte can be heard saying in the audio recording.
Schulte did not apologize for his comments in a public statement after he was fired. Schulte is a Democratic candidate for the North Carolina State House.

“Campus security had to escort me to my car because I was threatened at work after I spoke out about academic freedom and calling out racism and bigotry where I saw it,” Schulte wrote. “I spoke passionately on that topic because I care deeply about this country and am concerned about protecting constitutional freedoms, especially the First Amendment that defines them. Today’s events underscore why those protections are important.”
“In an effort to raise awareness of teacher evaluations taking place at UNC-Chapel Hill with secret records, I was secretly recorded by a student,” he wrote. “It is a sad statement about our country right now that my comments will bring threats not only to my job, but also to my life.”
Schulte is one of many academics across the country who have found themselves in hot water for a series of lewd speeches celebrating the death of TPUSA’s founder last year.

Many received short disciplinary breaks and are now back in their roles.
On December 30, Austin Peay State University in Tennessee sent a message to community members informing them that Darren Michael, associate professor of acting and directing, had been reinstated. Michael was fired on September 12, two days after Kirk was killed. He shared a post about Kirk’s 2023 speech that gun violence was “unfortunately necessary” to protect the Second Amendment.
On top of re-employmentAustin Peay admitted that it did not follow its policies for terminating tenured faculty, and paid Michael $500,000, according to local reports.

At the University of South Dakota, art professor Michael Hook was fired for beating Kirk after the murder.
“Okay. I don’t give a f— about this Kirk guy,” Hook said hours after Kirk was killed, according to Hook. Inside Hire Ed. “I’m sorry for his family that he was a hate-mongering Nazi and he was killed. I’m sure they deserved better. Maybe good people can now walk into their lives. But man, where was all this concern when Minnesota politicians got shot? And the school shooting? And the Capitol Police? I have no thoughts or prayers for this hate-mongering Nazi. Shrug, maybe.”

Hook sued the school after his suspension, and on September 26, a federal judge ordered him temporarily reinstated during the trial, ruling that he had a reasonable chance of winning his case.
Shortly thereafter, the South Dakota Board of Regents agreed not to fire Hook, and dismissed his case, The Argus Leader reported.
