New York Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay grew up in the Bronx, so he knows all about Bronx Bombers culture.
However, it looks like the Yankees are moving away from it, after it was revealed on Wednesday that the Yankees have another official jersey for the first time in the team’s 120-plus year history.
The news came out on Wednesday when the players were discussing the third jersey they will wear on the road with the top teams. MLB.com reported that the third jersey has been in the works “for a while.”

Kay said he “doesn’t care” if the Yankees stray from their culture, but his “problem with this” is that “it can’t be a one-way street.”
Kay said that if Hal Steinbrenner were the owner, “bleep[s] you guys everything,” he would tell them to “win the tournament for me, and I’ll give you things like this.”
“What I’ve seen over the years, ‘Let’s make things better for the players. Let’s give the players everything they want.’ And they deserve to have great things. It is not an easy job, but they are well compensated for it. But you pay top dollar, you have a modern clubhouse, you travel in style, you stay in luxury hotels. “Okay, well, it should be,” Kay continued.
“But the little extra things, ‘Let’s grow our hair long. Can we grow beards?’ Well, I won the championship. Because if I’m going to get away from the Yankees and what the Yankees stand for, then I’m going to need something back from you.”
“The players probably said, ‘We want to have fun like all the other teams. They have all these obscene uniforms.’ I won the championship. Maybe that’s the deal. I won the championship. I don’t think that’s a big question.”

The Yankees’ blue practice tops, similar to their spring training uniforms, are the official game wear.
The Yankees have participated in different jerseys in the past, including Players’ Weekend from 2017 to 2019, a nod to the 1912 team when it played in Boston for the 100th anniversary of the opening of Fenway Park, and jerseys commemorating the Black Yankees’ 1996 Yankees uniform 996. Field of Dreams debuts in 2021. However, none of those jerseys were ever officially included in the rotation.
The Yankees are also the only team that does not have their last name on the back of their jersey, home or away. They are also up against two teams including Athletics, who do not have a City Connect jersey. The Athletics, currently in Sacramento after their lease in Oakland expires following the 2024 season, will begin play in Las Vegas in 2028.

Steinbrenner has been able to change in recent years. The Yankees added an ad patch to their jerseys in 2023, and since last year, “well-groomed” facial hair. under the lip was restarted after a 50-year ban by Steinbrenner’s father, George.
