Man Utd make shock bid to sign Klopp’s £65k-a-week Liverpool star
Manchester United have been linked with the signing of former Liverpool star Neco Williams amid his impressive form at Nottingham Forest.
What Jurgen Klopp says about Neco Williams
With his move to the City Ground completed in the summer of 2022, Jurgen Klopp admitted it was disappointing to see Williams leave, saying: “He’s a bright, exciting talent and he’s going to the best team that’s going right now.
“He has achieved a lot but there is more to come. Premier League and Champions League experience for us; promotion last season with Fulham, who looked after him admirably, I must say; the one who takes part in our title wins for sure; one of the most important players in Wales and he is going to the World Cup.
“It’s not easy to let him go if I’m honest, but he deserves to play regularly and get the right to be ready for his international team in this competition that will come this winter.”
Since then, the defender has become a key player for Nottingham Forest, making 158 appearances for the club, and the Tricky Trees are keen to tie him down to a new contract, with his current deal due to expire in 2029.
That’s according to a BBC Sport report, which also says that Man United have now made a serious inquiry into signing Williams on a summer contract, with Premier League rivals Newcastle United, Everton and Aston Villa doing the same.
The 25-year-old currently earns £65k-a-week, but Forest are looking to offer him improved terms, as they are determined to fend off interest elsewhere.
Williams is now one of Forest’s most important players
The Wrexham-born defender, who can play on both sides of the defence, has got plenty of football under his belt this season, making 51 appearances in all competitions, and has only missed one Premier League game, which was through suspension.
Man United have been urged to sign left-back Gary Neville ahead of a busy campaign next season, with Michael Carrick’s side set to return to the Champions League.
Neville says: “If you’re going to play a 4-4-2, which I strongly believe United do, you have to have two special players there and have defenders who can play one-on-one.
“You’re asking a lot of players. I think United need a left-back next season because Luke Shaw has played every game this year and he might struggle.”
Shaw has struggled against Man United, so Carrick can bring in a left-back who is available for every game, and Williams has shown that he can do the job.
