New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Tuesday told Rolling Stone Magazine that the Democratic Party has become “run by well-paid consultants and big money interests.”
In the interview, Mamdani was asked about the comments of the former Chairman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) Jaime Harrison after members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) were defeated by the politicians who were present in the first election last month even though they had attacked the party.
“I say this without ill will or malice: if you hate the Democratic Party, please do not run for our nomination. Do not use our resources. Do not rely on our volunteers. the values they believe in. If you don’t believe in the party, don’t ask its members to pass you through,” Harrison wrote in X.

In response, Mamdani said, “I think that usually when a person says that this is not against or hatred, what he is about to say is related to hatred and hatred.”
He emphasized that the Democratic Party needs to be seen by the voters, who expressed their support for the Socialist candidates.
“You say that does not represent the party. It may not hurt the party that has become our party, which is managed by well-paid consultants and big money interests, but it represents what the Democrats want to see,” said Mamdani.

He added, “And it represents the fact that in this country there is only one majority and that is the working class. And that’s not just true in this city. It’s not just true in another city. It’s true in our entire nation. And people want to see a party that understands that and fights for that.”

Mamdani previously criticized the Democratic Party for “losing its focus on working people” during an interview last month and reiterated that more efforts should be made to combat inflation.

“You know, you look at the four freedoms, you look at the real core of the New Deal, there was a time when this party was not ashamed of its focus on working people. And I’m happy to bring it back there,” said Mamdani.

However, over the weekend, Mamdani struggled to provide a clear definition of who qualifies as the “working class.” He described the working class as “those who work to try to get the basic necessities of life and who can’t do it” and drew the line at “about a million dollars a year.”
