Chock and Bates joined their Olympic teammate, former gold medalist Alysa Liu, in withdrawing from the worlds, after Liu announced her retirement this past weekend, much to the surprise of many fans.
Chock and Bates helped the US secure the Olympic figure skating team gold medal in February, then added a silver in the individual event. They were second behind two French players, Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron, which is a highly watched result due to scoring by the French judge, Jézabel Dabouis.
We left everything on the ice in Milan,” said Bates. “Our season feels complete with those four games where we did our best.”

This decision caused a lot of criticism from fans who believed that the judge did not give accurate scores. However, the couple ultimately chose not to pass on the report.
Chock and Bates haven’t officially retired, but they’ve announced for the better part of four years that they’ll be stepping away from competition after the Milan Cortina Games. They will do so as the two most decorated athletes in US history, winning a record seven national titles, three Grand Prix Final gold medals and the most Grand Prix events.
They have been on the podium in the last four races and won in the last three.

“Although we have decided not to participate in the world championships, but we remember the wonderful things about winning three years ago,” said Bates. “Those achievements mean a lot to us. We couldn’t be more grateful for all the love and support.”
Caroline Green and Michael Parsons will fill in for Chock and Bates on the US ice dance team in Prague. They will join the Olympic teams of Christina Carreira and Anthony Ponomarenko and the duo of Emilea Zingas and Vadym Kolesnik.
