Former first lady Jill Biden faced an interview Monday about why she spoke at her husband’s debate so soon after his clash with President Donald Trump in 2024, despite her concerns when former President Joe Biden suffered a stroke.

On NBC’s “Today,” co-host Craig Melvin confronted Jill Biden about a post-debate clip in which she praised her husband in front of a group of supporters for answering all of the debate’s questions.

“And in the days and weeks after that, he continued to insist that the president was right,” Melvin said. “How – how do you think you could have had a stroke with what you said in the days and weeks that followed?

Biden said he saw that Joe seemed fine and noted that he admitted that he messed up when they were getting ready to go to another event.

“I know we’re going to another event, or we still have two more to do, and I, my mind is racing,” said Biden. “What do I say to him? What do I say to him? I’m his wife, I have to lift him up. So, we go to the next party and I’m thinking, ‘What am I saying that’s going to lift him up that’s true?’ I want to say things that are true. And so I said, you know, ‘You answered all the questions.’

Melvin commented, “That’s a very low bar.”

“Well, you know, I had to lift him up,” Biden continued. “I mean, I’m his wife. I’m not going to go on stage and say, ‘Joe, you ruined that.’ I mean, we also have all our supporters there. So, you know, that was mine, that’s who we are. I mean, I had to support him. I couldn’t come out and say, basically, say, ‘Joe, you did a terrible job on that debate.’

WHAT TO DO IF SOMEONE HAS A STROKE, AFTER JILL BIDEN EXPOSES DEBATE-EIGHT FEAR

In an interview that aired last week, the former first lady revealed that she thought her husband had a stroke during the 2024 debate.

“I wasn’t scared, I was scared,” Biden recalled in a recent interview.

“I’ve never seen Joe like this before or since. It scared me to death,” she said.

The former president’s debate eventually led to his exit from the race. Melvin also confronted Jill Biden by saying that if he wished, he would have encouraged her to serve just one term as president.

“You’re his closest confidant. You’re described as someone who checks Joe’s gut. If you could go back in a time machine and do that again, would you maybe encourage him to run again?” Melvin asked.

Jill replied, “You know, as I look back, would I want to put Joe out of the pain and hurt that we felt at that time?

“But it should have been his decision, Craig,” she said. “It had to be his decision alone, because he had to live with that decision for the rest of his life. I wasn’t going to say, ‘Joe, do this’ or ‘Joe, do that.’ It was his decision to run in the first place – his only – although the family had their opinions, especially the grandchildren. But you know, it was his choice to come out.”
