It’s Time for the Detroit Red Wings to Add Some NHL-Caliber Players

This is the off-season where the Detroit Red Wings need to move some of their NHL-caliber players.
The Daily Faceoff: David Pagnotta, on the Detroit Red Wings for their lack of depth, and an offseason where they could have traded more for players. They should follow the path of the Montreal Canadiens last season where they traded away a top player who will now help – Noah Dobson.
Irfaan Gaffar: “Any other unsuccessful GM would have been dead long ago, but Steve Yzerman wasn’t fired. So what’s next for the Detroit Red Wings?”
Pagnotta: “Yeah. I mean, look, Stevie’s relationship with ownership is deep. Deep.”
San Jose Sharks – Celebrini, Ferraro, Mukhamadullin, and Warsofsky
Gaffar: “Yes, 100%.
Pagnotta: “He sold his plan, and it’s starting to bear fruit, in the sense that he rebuilt this cabinet. He filled it. The prospect pool is deep. Not everyone will hit, but it’s deep. It allows them to build and accumulate small assets that will take the next step at the NHL level, or raise the pieces of the NHL to put the pieces and start moving the NHL.
Now, I think they are in that category. I think they should be in that category. We saw what this team was capable of when they were healthy, but when injuries hit, they fell apart. And they don’t have the depth to make up for the fact that you’re not going to have, you know, losing Dylan Larkin for two weeks. You lose Andrew Copp for two weeks, or three weeks, whatever it is. You lose this guy or that guy who’s going to step up. You don’t have those deep pieces to climb.
But I think they are on the level now, and I believe, I believe the management also feels this. A lot, not a lot of things come out of Detroit. They keep a tight lid on things, but every now and then, a few things. Talk to other teams around the league. It feels like this is going to be their season to jump in using a lot of their small assets to repeat, jump, or combine some of those pieces to bring in NHL-level players, similar to what Montreal did last season.
He traded two first-round picks and Emil Heineman, a solid, third-line backup, for Noah Dobson. He’s injured right now, but he used to be a student, and he’s in his mid-20s.
Does Toronto Maple Leafs Defenseman Morgan Rielly Need a Change of Location?
Like what Detroit needs to start doing now. And I think, or if that’s what they’re going to look to do in this difficult time, is to make a little noise here and start taking those next steps, the next steps, to be the Montreal of next season. Buffalo next season. Ottawa next season.”
