Is ‘Project Hail Mary’ streaming anywhere? How to watch it at home.

Content

Project Hail Mary the first movie to bring me to theaters at a shy time. So far I am not willing to disclose it on the internet. But I’m so glad it’s a movie brought back to theaters because it was So. Dang. Good.

This book was a masterpiece and I’m happy to report that Drew Goddard’s adaptation of Andy Weir’s novel (of the same name) does it justice. Sure, it took some liberties with the story, but it made for a quick, emotional ride. Also, I’m not mad about a lot of science hacks being cut.

It stars a smart, smartly dressed Ryland Gosling as Ryland Grace and a lovable rock spider alien named Rocky (portrayed by James Oritz).

Project Hail Mary premiered in theaters on March 20, 2026 and can still be seen in theaters across the country, but now the film is expanding its horizons and giving you another way to sing. Here’s everything you need to know to watch Grace and Rocky at home.

What Project Hail Mary about?

Middle school science teacher Ryland Grace (Gosling) wakes up from a space coma (Hail Mary) with no memory of who he is or why he’s there. As his memory slowly returns, he realizes that he is the sole survivor of a group on a suicidal mission to save Earth from a strange insect (astrophage) that eats up the sun’s energy. Can his scientific skills and patience help him save humanity?

When will it happen? Project Hail Mary streaming?

Amazon MGM Studios announced in mid-April that it was delaying the streaming release Project Hail Mary and extending its theatrical run. The film even returned to IMAX theaters for a week to give audiences a chance to see the film as it was originally intended.

“We announced yesterday that MGM is extending the exclusive theatrical window for Project Hail Mary, so it won’t be airing anytime soon,” co-director Christopher Miller said in a post to X. “This is a movie that needs to be seen on the big screen…make plans to see it in theaters now! Bring friends and loved ones. It’s an experience to share.”

It doesn’t follow the theatrical streaming path like other Amazon MGM films, but I can see why. This is also completely new territory for the studio. It’s Amazon MGM’s highest-grossing film ever and second in 2026 overall, it seems the studio is waiting as long as possible before releasing it.

However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. While it won’t make it to streaming services, you’ll be able to watch it at home if you buy or rent it digitally.

Buy or rent it digitally

Project Hail Mary officially makes its home debut on digital retail sites like Prime Video and Fandango Home on May 12, 2026. You can rent it at low cost or buy it permanently for more from any of the dealers below. With a rental, you’ll have 30 days to watch and just 48 hours to finish watching once you start.

Stream on Prime Video or MGM+ (coming days)

When Project Hail Mary when it finally hits streaming is anyone’s guess, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say it could be mid-June (at the earliest). However, as I mentioned above, this is uncharted territory. The release of the stream may be pushed back even further. We will update this story if we find out more.

Another thing to note is that it could make its streaming debut on MGM+ or Prime Video. Previous Amazon MGM Studios movies like Challenges again Click twice acquired MGM+ first before expanding to Prime Video. It seems unlikely that Amazon would choose to release its biggest movie on its own small, streaming service, but we wanted to give you fair warning that is something it is possible.

The good news is that both Prime Video and MGM+ offer free trials when you sign up. If you are not currently a Prime Video or Prime subscriber, you can sign up for a free 30-day trial of Amazon Prime. That goes for new subscribers and those returning to Prime after a while. MGM+ offers users a free seven-day trial to get things started, then costs $7.99 per month or $5.17 per month if you sign up for a year.

30-day free trial, then $14.99 per month

7-day free trial, then $7.99 per month
