I’m getting old. This wearable health tracker promises to keep me slim

Not to start this post on a low note, but as I approach the half-century mark of my journey on this beautiful planet, my motivation to exercise has been driven less by wanting to “look good” or “feel good” than by simply wanting to exercise. heavy. A little jogging here, a little weight lifting there, maybe some unexpected stretching as I talk to my wife in the kitchen. Put it where you can.
Or at least that’s been my go-to approach to fitness, which makes me think it might be time to focus more on this, perhaps with a fitness trainer – and if I can strap that trainer to my wrist, all the better.
As Father’s Day approaches (hint, dear), I have my eye on one of the leaders in the wearable-fitness-tracking-and-health-improving space: Whoop. You’ve probably seen the device on the wrists of Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas or Nelly Korda, who use it to monitor important things like heart rate and breathing rate, and how effectively their bodies recover from physical and mental stress, or how well they sleep. (For example: After McIlroy’s 2026 Masters win, Whoop shared his performance data, which showed that after hitting a tee shot on the 72nd hole, his heart rate dropped to 135 beats per minute, but then dropped to 121 BPM during recovery, a sign, Whoop said, of “rap relief.”

This kind of data is very important to world-class athletes, but I’m sure it can and should be important to urban dads. I may not need to know my BPM when I burn a toaster or leave my phone behind on the train, but I can certainly benefit from better understanding my sleep needs or tracking my blood pressure or even knowing my heart health in the form of an electrocardiogram reading, all of which Whoop can provide.
I think what really appeals to me, though, about Whoop’s capabilities is the Strength Trainer function, which combines the stress you put on your muscles, bones and joints during strength training. A trainer will also help you create a customized workout that meets your specific fitness needs and goals. I also love that Whoop syncs with Strava, my favorite running app.
All this tracking doesn’t come cheap. Cables start at $199/year for the base package and go up to $359/year if you want blood pressure and ECG readings. But if you’re committed to using technology to improve your well-being, it’s money well spent. Or, better yet, on Father’s Day, your kids’ (or your partner’s) money is well spent.
