A Houston meteorologist said he was fired from KRPC-TV last week after a post went viral on Instagram criticizing the station, complaining that street reporting was neglected at the Emmy Awards and accusing the news station of tolerating a poor workplace.

“I don’t have KPRC anymore — and for that, thank you very much. Maybe you’ve read the headlines?” Brittany Begley said, according to the Chron.

Brittany Begley, 44, confirmed her departure from the NBC affiliate on Wednesday’s Instagram after her previous comments drew national attention. He told the Houston Chronicle that he was fired and said he did not agree with the way weekend programming was handled.

“I don’t agree with the way weekends are handled after many efforts to make it better for all people,” she said.

Begley’s departure comes less than three weeks after she posted on Instagram on June 7 that she felt fed up with the industry and frustrated by what she saw as disrespect for her work.

“Sorry, but I’m tired of coming home to an empty fridge,” she said.

In the post, Begley said that traffic reporters are often ignored even though they cover disasters, road closures and other public safety related information.

“I never won an Emmy because the markets I worked in never thought traffic reporting was worth it,” Begley said.

He said that this incident left him wondering if the industry appreciates his work, and he said that he still believes that he has taken over.

“After this pandemic, I told myself that if I die, at least I’ll know that I stood for something… even if the industry never thought I did,” Begley said.

Begley also criticized KPRC’s newsroom culture, accusing some of his colleagues of showing up late and not preparing before broadcasts while management was accused of allowing that behavior to reach the air.

“Then it’s late, not even ten minutes before the game, and they put it on the air as a part,” he said.

After the post went viral, Begley said she wasn’t trying to insult her colleagues but wanted to raise broader concerns about accountability, workplace culture and mental health in television news, the Chron reported.

“I believe in accountability. This conversation is not going away anytime soon,” Begley said.

KPRC News Director Ana Lastra confirmed Begley’s exit to the Houston Chronicle and wished him well, but said the station would not discuss the circumstances of his departure.

“According to policy, we do not comment on labor issues,” said Lastra.

Sean McLaughlin, KPRC’s vice president and general manager, previously told the New York Post that the station is aware of Begley’s work and takes the staffer’s concerns seriously.

“Our station takes the issues raised by employees seriously and is committed to promoting a positive work environment. As this matter affects one employee, we have no further comment,” said McLaughlin.

Begley said in his next post that he plans to continue speaking publicly about the media business and wants a bigger platform to represent people who have built careers in entry-level roles, according to the Chron.
