Fabrizio Romano reveals Regis Le Bris’ future at Sunderland as sack talk swirls

Sunderland fans were shocked this week by rumors that Regis Le Bris could be sacked if the Black Cats do not get European football this season.

Le Bris opens up about Sunderland relegation rumours

Le Bris has dismissed speculation he could lose his job at the end of a stunning first season back in the Premier League if the club miss out on a place in the European competition.

Reports this week suggested the club’s management could opt to change head coach this summer if the Frenchman fails to secure Conference League or Europa League football in the 2026-27 campaign, something that would have been beyond their wildest dreams at the start of the year.

Asked if he had spoken to owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus or director of football Florent Ghisolfi about the speculation, Le Bris said: “No, we can talk about different topics.

“My position is always on the table, whether it is good or bad.

“We wanted to build consistency and a top 10 position, and we’re on our way. I hope we have the ability to do it together.”

Le Bris has a contract at Sunderland until the summer of 2028, and is represented by the same organization as French manager Patrick Vieira.

Asked further if he is surprised by these allegations, Le Bris, who stated that he did not want certainty about his future, added: “No.

“Everyone can put my opinion on my work or your work. I don’t object to rumors or gossip. I only focus on my work, it’s not a problem.”

Aston Villa are planning a move for the £35m star Sunderland are now willing to sell

The Villans want to sign an “unbelievable” player.

A number of Premier League clubs could be looking for a new manager this summer, including Chelsea and Crystal Palace, so it would be a surprise if the Wearsiders parted ways with the 50-year-old in a competitive market, and Fabrizio Romano has now revealed what he knows about the situation.

Indeed, speaking on his YouTube channel on Friday, the journalist gave Black Cats fans what should be music to their ears – Le Bris is not going anywhere.

“We had rumors that Le Bris will probably lose his job at Sunderland if he is not ready to play European football, my understanding is that Sunderland wants to continue with Le Bris.

“It’s not based on what will happen in this Premier League season, I’m just focused on whether I can continue with Le Bris, so that’s the feeling right now.

“We will see at the end of the season but Sunderland have confirmed that they want to continue with Regis Le Bris.”

Nottingham Forest defender Murillo has been ruled out of Friday’s game.

The Brazilian midfielder limped off in Sunday’s 4-1 win over Burnley due to an injury that will likely rule him out of the Stadium of Light.

Murillo joins Callum Hudson-Odoi in the treatment room, with the winger out for the season after undergoing surgery on a thigh problem.
