Empire State Building stunt: Daredevil couple arrested after proposal

Some suggestions for New York City include a view of the skyline. This one involved police custody.

Two people were arrested on Wednesday, July 1, after climbing to the top of the Empire State Building, unfurling a banner, and apparently turning everything into a marriage proposal 1,454 feet above the city of Manhattan.

They were seen around noon on the roof of the building, dressed in black and wearing masks. They attached a banner that read, “When the power of love exceeds the love of power, the world knows peace.” It takes an oft-quoted quote attributed to guitarist Jimi Hendrix, but actually spoken by 19th-century British politician William Gladstone.

After spending about half an hour near the top of the tower, the two began to descend to the ground floor, where one was seen kneeling on one knee. Because apparently the point of view was very basic.

The passengers were identified as Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus, a Russian couple of daredevils and content creators who were highlighted in the Netflix documentary 2024. Skywalkers: A Love Story.

Nikolau, a former gymnast and the daughter of circus performers, and Beerkus, a long-time “roofer”, have built their own community in the illegal streets of skyscrapers and landmarks around the world. The documentary follows both their relationship and one of their most dangerous feats: an attempt to scale Malaysia’s Merdeka 118, one of the world’s tallest buildings.

Once at the top, the couple made sure to post on social media, and the photos went viral.

Police arrested them after they got off, and a spokeswoman for the Empire State Building called the incident “unauthorized.” Their social media team, meanwhile, used the moment to poke fun at another big event happening in New York City this week (cough Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce).

It is still unclear how the climbers reached the pole, which is high above the public areas of the building. The Empire State Building remained open for at least part of the incident, although the observation deck was reportedly cleared later as police responded.

It was not the first time someone climbed the Empire State Building – daredevils and climbers, such as Alain Roberthave, who jumped the building in 1994, have entered the building’s pole and other restricted areas, while Jared Leto officially scaled part of the landmark in 2023 to promote Thirty Seconds to Mars.

As far as nominations go, this was the first time it didn’t happen in the viewing area.
