About 10 people were arrested in New York over the weekend as anti-ICE protesters protested the arrest of an illegal immigrant accused of assault and drug possession, according to officials.
Protests erupted in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bushwick after ICE arrested Chidozie Wilson Okeke, an illegal immigrant from Nigeria who was arrested for assault and drug possession, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Okeke entered the US on a tourist visa in 2023 and overstayed his visa that required him to leave the country in Feb. 26, 2024, DHS said.
During an immigration enforcement operation on Saturday, Okeke refused to comply with ICE agents’ instructions to get out of his car and tried to hit them with a car, according to the agency. He was then accused of “physically fighting” and attempting to punch and beat ICE agents.

“Our officers followed their training and used the necessary force to make the arrest,” the DHS statement said.
After his arrest, Okeke was taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center for evaluation. Okeke was “disobedient during the medical examination, throwing himself on the ground and screaming,” DHS said, adding that he was eventually cleared by medical staff.

During the medical examination, a crowd of anti-ICE protesters gathered outside the hospital. DHS says the group damaged several ICE vehicles and harassing agents, causing minor injuries.

The NYPD said officers responded to reports of unruly protesters outside the hospital between Stanhope and Stockholm streets on Saturday around 10:25 p.m. Police reported seeing several people acting disorderly, blocking traffic and blocking emergency exits and exits to the hospital.
The police issued repeated warnings for the protesters to disperse and return to the streets, according to the department.
Nine people were taken into custody, including eight who were arrested and charged with resisting arrest, obstructing government administration, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief, the NYPD said. One person was issued a summons and released.

The NYPD said it does not participate in immigration enforcement and had no prior knowledge of ICE operations.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani told a Gothamist reporter after Saturday’s incident that the ICE raid was “brutal and barbaric” and “does nothing to serve public safety, and I even said that directly to the president.”
