Dark cherries may slow the growth of breast cancer, new research suggests

The popular fruit contains compounds that may slow the growth of aggressive breast cancer, according to new research.

The findings focused on sweet black cherries.

Researchers focused on the effects of anthocyanins, the natural pigments that give black cherries their color, on triple-negative breast cancer in mice, Texas A&M University said in a press release on Feb. 25.

This disease is known for “limited treatment options and a high risk of metastasis.”

The researchers “found that anthocyanin treatment reduced tumor growth, reduced the spread of cancer to multiple organs and altered gene activity linked to metastasis and resistance to treatment,” according to the release.

“Unlike other types of breast cancer, triple breast cancer lacks estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors and expression of the HER2 protein, a growth-promoting protein that helps control the way cells grow and multiply,” the statement reads.

“Because of the absence of these molecular targets, cancer has few treatment options and is more likely to spread to different organs, especially the lungs and brain.”

The researchers divided the mice into four groups to analyze the effects of the compound.

One group was given the anthocyanin-rich sweet black cherry before the tumors were introduced – and the other was given chemotherapy after the tumors appeared.

The third group was given both chemotherapy and cherry extract, and the fourth group was given no treatment at all.

The results showed that the mice that were given cherry extract before the implants were implanted developed more slowly with no side effects – they continued to gain weight during the study.

The group that was given both treatments also showed that the frontal tumor moved slowly and kept its weight.

Mice treated with chemotherapy alone experienced reduced tumor growth later in the study, although some lost weight.

The last group – those who were not given treatment – experienced tumor growth and spread without intervention.

Giuliana Noratto, an associate research scientist in Texas A&M’s Department of Food Science and Technology, emphasized the importance of studying tumor growth and the spread of the disease.

“This is important because most cancer deaths are due to metastasis,” Noratto said.

“A large primary tumor that does not metastasize may be manageable, even curable, if removed.”

The scientist added that triple breast cancer is considered “very dangerous” because of its aggressiveness and the fact that cancer cells “divide quickly.”

“All of these factors make it more likely to spread to distant organs and recur compared to other types of breast cancer,” added Noratto.

More research is needed to determine whether similar effects can be seen in humans.

Fox News Digital has reached out to Texas A&M for additional comment.

This is not the first time researchers have discovered the potential health benefits of cherries.
