Claude Voice Mode Gets an Upgrade, Now Enables New Models

Claude’s voice mode is getting a major upgrade, Anthropic announced Thursday in a blog post. Your voice prompts are now powered by new models, and can speak in different languages.

The ability to speak to AI chatbots with your voice is nothing new, but Anthropic’s latest updates add more than just better understanding. Voice mode now works on Claude Opus, Sonnet and Haiku, while previously it was only available on the latter. Using Haiku made for a nice, quick conversation with Claude, but without the ability to dive as deeply as other models can. All that has now changed with Thursday’s announcement.

Talking to chatbots with your voice is becoming easier, and Anthropic wanted to bring robust models into the mix to make conversations more in-depth. With the ability to use both Opus and Claude’s Sonnet models, conversations should be smooth, and without the potential hiccups of a more efficient but less structured model.

Now you can also switch models between voice chats and switch from voice to text on demand to start a new chat. The last feature may sound small, but it can be meaningful if you’ve had a deep conversation with an AI using your voice, but your current situation changes, and you need to switch to a text-only conversation.

Talk to your tools

It’s not just about better models in voice mode — now you can also talk to your third-party connections in voice mode to perform actions. Now, you can talk directly about the tools you connected to Claude, such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack and Canva. By doing so, you can ask Claude to reschedule a meeting if you’re running late in Google Calendar or tell him to shorten emails and start writing responses to the most important ones.

As AI becomes more agentic and takes action on your behalf, even for simple things, just speaking into your microphone makes the experience seamless.

New language support

Anthropic has now expanded voice mode significantly with support for new languages. Complete list of languages now:

  • English
  • French
  • German
  • Hindi
  • Indonesian
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Portuguese (Brazilian)
  • Spanish (Latin America)
  • Spanish (Spain)

For now, you’ll need to tell Claude to switch languages, but you can do that with your voice, too. You can also do this in the menus.

New voice mode updates are available in beta for all users on mobile, desktop and web. There are limitations for free users – keeping the voice mode model in Haiku and only one connected tool, but with support for all languages. Paid users can get new and expanded access to new models and all third-party connected apps. Anthropic says that all usage counts towards your standard usage limit.
