Classroom Routines and Procedures Checklist (Free Printable)

Any seasoned teacher can tell you that classroom management is one of the most important skills a teacher can have, and it all starts with a clear list of classroom routines and procedures. After all, even if you prepare the best lessons, have a very welcoming class, and have a lot of knowledge, there won’t be much learning going on if your classroom is chaotic.

The key is to start the school year off right by teaching classroom routines and establishing strong, reliable routines that students will follow every day. A lot of front-loading is required, but once your kids have them down, you’re off to a good start. To help you get started, we’ve created this expert checklist of classroom routines and procedures so you can thoughtfully create a structure that will benefit you, keep you sane, and, most importantly, help your students succeed.

How to Use the Classroom Routes and Procedures Checklist

Divided into all relevant classroom situations, the checklist covers everything from the start of the day to the last bell. In each section, we suggest a few activities, and leave blank spaces to add your favorite techniques. Here are a few topics included in the checklist:

  • Teach students hand signals so they can communicate their needs without interrupting the flow.
  • Set ground rules for breaks to reduce playground friction.
  • Arrivals and departures are the prime moments of misbehavior. Teach students how to enter and exit peacefully.
  • During lessons, children can easily get out of the way. Teach them what to expect so you can transition smoothly.
  • Almost all classrooms use technology. Teach children how to properly use and care for their devices.
  • It is important for students to stay cool in the event of an emergency. Explain and practice so children know what to expect.
  • Resource management is an important part of maintaining order in the classroom. Have a schedule for checking papers, delivering library books, sharpening pencils, borrowing school supplies, etc.

Why You Should Use a Checklist

Teaching practices and procedures are a common part of the beginning of each school year. But sometimes it’s hard to keep track of what you’ve learned and what you still need to teach. Our checklist is a great organizational tool to keep all of your classroom management lessons in one central place.

What’s Included in the Checklist

The checklist covers everything from communication to using classroom resources, working with classmates, and maintaining technology. Also included are spaces you can add to customize.

Hand Signals, Break, Arrival, and Dismissal

Establishing expectations at busy times such as the beginning and end of the day, during lesson time, and during recess helps children navigate the day more easily.

Without routines and procedures, the day can easily become overwhelmed with a million questions. By playing out different situations and letting the kids practice, the little things are taken care of so you can all focus on the big things—like learning.

Classwork, Assessments, Events, and Emergencies

Knowing in advance what to do in different situations allows children to control their reactions and behavior. It promotes respect for other people and the learning environment.

Why Teachers Love Classroom Routines and Routines

Most teachers have experienced the frustration of children constantly coming to them for answers: “Where do I put my paper?” “My pencil is broken.” “Can I go to the bathroom?” When clear routines and procedures are established, students learn to solve their own problems and complete tasks on their own rather than relying on the teacher for every little thing. Additionally, when students know what to expect, there is less wiggle room for misbehavior and more time available for learning.

Why Students Love Routines and Routines

Predictable routines and procedures help students feel safe and secure because they know what to expect throughout the day. This gives them the confidence to manage responsibilities and work independently rather than relying on teachers for guidance (see above). In addition, shared expectations help students interact respectfully and contribute to a calm, productive environment in which learning can flourish.
