Carrick must ditch the 13x Man Utd star

Manchester United failed to give up victory under Michael Carrick for the third time last night, as his side drew 2-2 with Bournemouth.

The Red Devils took a double lead during the Premier League meeting on the South Coast, with Bruno Fernandes and a goal from James Hill looking to secure another three points.

However, Eli Kroupi Junior’s penalty in the 81st minute was enough to earn the Cherries a point and upset Carrick in the tenth game of his temporary reign.

The point moved the Red Devils four points ahead of fourth-placed Aston Villa, and ensured the team stayed in third place ahead of the upcoming international break.

On top of this, it was a night to forget for one player, who struggled to play well against the Cherries at the Vitality Stadium.

The stats behind Harry Maguire’s display against Bournemouth

Before kick-off on Friday night, it was a big day for United defender Harry Maguire, with plenty of good news coming out throughout the day.

The 33-year-old was named in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad during the recent international break, and there is also talk of a new contract until the summer of 2027.

However, his performance against Bournemouth was certainly one to forget, as the defender was shown a red card after being adjudged to have pulled down Evanilson in the penalty area.

His basic stats prior to his dismissal were similarly disappointing, as Maguire failed to perform, while he was twice outclassed on two occasions.

The defender was able to find teammates with 73% of the passes he attempted, and put the home team back on eight separate occasions.

The United star was worse than Maguire v Bournemouth

Despite coming perilously close to yet another win under Carrick’s leadership, many players alongside Maguire failed to deliver against Bournemouth.

Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo also dropped significantly from the level he had set for himself in recent months after returning to the senior team following Carrick’s appointment on a part-time basis.

The Englishman lost 100% of the air battles he participated in, and he also failed to win the battles he fought personally – which were again dominated by the opposition.

With the ball at his feet, the 20-year-old was also disappointing, losing the ball 100% of the time trying to pass it past his opponents, while making just two passes into the final third.

However, striker Bryan Mbeumo once again disappointed the Red Devils as the Cameroonian found it difficult to adapt to the demands of playing as a central striker.

He was forced to work in such a role with Amad Diallo, the man currently preferred by Carrick to start on the right for the Red Devils.

It is the sixth game in a row that the 26-year-old player has failed to score, and his continued selection may start to confuse fans in the coming weeks.

His key figures against Andoni Iraola’s side also reflect his struggles, with the manager desperately needing to get him out of the starting eleven.

Mbeumo managed to register a solo effort on goal, but it didn’t bother the team’s goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic – who had just three saves all night.

The player from Cameroon also managed to finish 59% of the players who tried, and gave the opposition 13 times.

He also managed to register a touch in the opposition box, while failing to create opportunities for his teammates – showing his struggles in attacking areas.

After such a performance, coupled with Benjamin Sesko’s recent goal-scoring performance, Carrick desperately needs to stop regrouping in the summer after the international break.

It is becoming clear week by week that he is not the player who should lead especially if the club is determined to fight for the Champions League.

Maguire has certainly failed to attract attention for the right reasons, but Mbeumo was undoubtedly disappointed during the South Coast raid.
