California restaurant charges parents for damages from unruly children

A California small business owner is tired of unruly kids at his restaurant, and now he’s making parents pay the price.

You You Xue operates two restaurants in south San Francisco. He told The Post that he was launching damage suits against certain debtors after repeated problems with unruly children disrupting other meals.

“My workers, my providers were forced to raise children on behalf of other parents. That’s not their job,” Xue told The Post, adding, “Raising children has become free, and I know that if I did other ways for these children to behave, I would have found my rhythm.”

The restaurant’s online menu includes advice at the top of the page under the heading, “Please supervise your children.”

Some of the prohibited acts are running, shouting, and making noise with dishes, which the menu goes on to say in all caps, “will not be tolerated.”

“Guests who do not respect this policy may be asked to leave. We will hold the parents responsible for all the damage caused by their children to the restaurant’s equipment,” it added.

The page also shows some situations where Xue decides to charge the parents for bad behavior. In one incident, a child picked up and dropped a credit card machine, shattering the screen. The family was billed $327.03. In one instance we saw a child carving designs on the table using utensils. Those parents were charged $109.38 in damages.

The last incident listed on the website reads, “A customer’s child was playing in the booth seats and knocked a teacup onto the floor, breaking it. We charged the parent $5.47 for damages.”

Xue said the response to the rules, which came into force last year but went viral last month, had been positive – although some online felt the teacup charges were excessive.

He explained to The Post that parents are not charged when accidents happen, but he realized that a new policy was needed after seeing the deterioration of parenting and behavior of young children.

“We don’t blame the kids — I’m very proud that this is an unpretentious restaurant where people come with their whole families,” he said, adding, “It will remind this small group of parents who are not doing their job: please do your job so we can do ours.”

The viral policy also sparked a discussion on “Fox & Friends,” in which fellow trustee Lawrence Jones argued that a lack of parenting is causing disruptive behavior. “This is very simple. This is not contradictory, is it?” Jones said Thursday.

He revealed his childhood, and said that his parents should have given him and his siblings a chance to behave well. “My parents handled discipline very well. And it got to the point where all they had to do was look after me. Me and my siblings, we knew we would be in good shape,” he said.

“That’s been frowned upon in today’s society. So, you’ve got crazy kids on airplanes, doing crazy things in stores, kicking seats. You’ve got them throwing things across the room,” Jones added.
