Brentford have made a bid to sign West Ham star El Hadji Malick Diouf, with a new update coming out of France this evening.
Diouf arrived at West Ham last summer, but has developed into one of the club’s most important young players.
The Senegal international joined from Slavia Prague after a fine season in the Czech Republic, where he helped his side win the league title while establishing himself as the most exciting left-back in the Czech league.
Before moving to Prague, Diouf had impressed in Norway with Tromso, and his rapid rise convinced West Ham to sign one of the brightest prospects in African football.
His first season in England amply justified that belief.
Although there were inevitable moments where he showed his inexperience, Diouf became a regular under Graham Potter and then Nuno Espírito Santo because of his strength, pace and willingness to attack from deep.
Comfortable as a left-back or on the wing, he provided West Ham with another forward and showed flashes of quality that attracted clubs across Europe before moving to east London.
His performances have also been praised elsewhere in the Premier League, with Everton among the clubs linked earlier this year.
Like many young defenders, his positioning and decision-making were sometimes under scrutiny, but that was balanced by his athleticism, confidence in handling and ability to jump.
At just 21, West Ham will believe there is plenty of room for improvement, making him one of the club’s biggest long-term assets, which is why losing him now would be difficult.

According to Foot Mercato reporter Santi Aouna, however, Brentford are trying to change that.
Aouna reports that the Bees have sent West Ham a bid for Diouf, with talks ongoing between the two clubs. He also said that Brentford are not the only ones interested in them, with several other clubs monitoring the Senegalese player as his reputation continues to grow.
At the moment, there is no indication that a deal is close, and we have yet to hear what West Ham’s response to the offer is, or how significant the offer is.
West Ham only signed Diouf last year and remain under little pressure to sell him as he is tied down until 2030, while the marquee sales of Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville suggest Nuno’s side will not be exploited in the transfer market despite their Championship status.
Brentford may need a major offer if they are to convince the Hammers to part with one of their most promising defenders.
From West Ham’s perspective, patience may be the wisest approach.
