A California man has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to murdering his father’s younger brother, who had cerebral palsy and was in a wheelchair.
Zuberi Sharp, 26, was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty in March to killing his 15-year-old brother, Zayde, according to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office.
He also admitted special allegations and aggravating factors, including that he caused grievous bodily harm, that he used a weapon in the commission of a crime and that the victim was in danger.
On December 5, 2024, deputies were called to a home in the 400 block of Jeanne Court in Newbury Park shortly after 8 pm following a 911 call from Zayde’s mother, who reported that her son had been hit in the head with an object.

The victim’s mother reported that Sharp attacked Zayde with a pick inside the shed in the yard.
The girl’s uncle heard a loud noise and rushed to the shed to check on the two brothers. He looked at Sharp standing over Zayde with a pickaxe.
Zayde was taken to the hospital, where he was found to have died shortly after arriving.
Meanwhile, Sharp fled the scene and was found at nearby Newbury Park High School, where deputies took him into custody after receiving reports of a man acting out on the football field, authorities said.

The incident forced a shutdown, as student athletes were on the field when he arrived.
“This sentence reflects the seriousness of the violent and senseless act against the victim,” Deputy District Attorney David Russell said in a press release. “While nothing can undo this loss, it ensures that the accused is held accountable and that the victim’s family does not have to face the pain of guilt.”
Investigators have not released a motive for the attack, but family members told KTLA they believe Sharp was having a manic episode at the time.

“It’s hard,” Zayde’s mother told the store at a ceremony honoring her son. “It was really hard. Pain every day.”
Sharp is also the son of convicted murderer Calvin Sharp, who killed a 6-year-old boy with a butcher knife in 2007. He pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to life in prison.
