The police chief resigned after allegations that he was caught having an affair with the suspect’s wife
We’ve all heard the stories about the spark, one thing leading to another situation that takes two people who aren’t looking for romance on a trip to their front door anyway. It’s a legend as old as time.
That’s what allegedly happened last year in Lake County, Florida, between a former police chief, who resigned in June after being placed on administrative leave in May, and the suspect’s wife.
One day, Michael Giddens, a former lieutenant in the Howie-in-the-Hills Police Department, searches for clues in a possible contractor fraud case. A few months later, he is accused of sleeping with the suspect’s wife.

An investigation into those allegations by the Florida Department of Justice and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office found that although he did not commit any crime, Giddens violated police and city policies.
FOX 35 Orlando reports that the results of the investigation were released last Thursday. They found that he violated the rules regarding inappropriate conduct, behavior, and sexuality while at work.

It all started when Giddens sued a man in December 2024 for defrauding a potential contractor. The man initially had conversations, according to the report, with the lieutenant at the time before he stopped answering.
Giddens allegedly contacted the man’s wife in March 2025 trying to get her to contact the man. They met for lunch and continued texting after that.
The report says that in the end “their relationship became one.” The two allegedly met at hotels in the area while Giddens was at work and had sex twice.

The relationship grew quickly, and at the end of 2025 they did not see each other anymore because the man’s wife had found someone new. Giddens was promoted to Chief of Police in October 2025.

It is clear that this promotion took place before allegations were made that he unduly extended the long arm of the law.

According to the report, a complaint was made in November 2025 about Giddens and possible ethics violations. Then in May 2026, the City of Howey-in-the-Hills received an anonymous complaint.
That’s when the investigation started. Giddens wrote in his resignation letter, according to FOX 35 Orlando, “Although I always maintain the highest standards of professional conduct, I refuse to allow my personal life to be used as a tool to interfere with the important work of this organization.”
That is a strong resignation. All the allegations about his health are just a distraction and he will not let that affect this organization.
