Two Colombian nationals were arrested in California after students using license plates alerted authorities to a stolen Mercedes-Benz linked to a series of violent carjackings in recent days, officials said.
A 2015 Mercedes-Benz C300 was reported stolen during a violent carjacking and assault with a deadly weapon in Hawthorne, California, on July 11, according to a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department news release.
Days later, deputies received an alert from a license plate reader that indicated the vehicle was passing through Rolling Hills Estates. When our deputies searched for the vehicle, they found it was related to a recent burglary in Torrance, authorities said.

Deputies found the Mercedes stopped near Palos Verdes Drive North and Rolling Vista Drive.
When the car stopped, the passenger got out and ran, prompting deputies to stop the area, according to the sheriff’s department.

The driver, Yareht Pedraza, 26, from Bogotá, Colombia, was taken into custody at the scene.
“With deputies securing the border and an LASD aircraft overhead, the search moved from the roads to the skies. In a short time, the passenger was located and taken into custody,” the sheriff’s department said.

The passenger, Alan Pena Sabogn, 21, also from Bogotá, was later apprehended and arrested on suspicion of failure to obey a lawful order, obstructing a peace officer and providing false information, authorities said.
Officials say Sabogn had an outstanding warrant for burglary out of Colorado.

“This arrest is another example of how technology, policing and collaboration between deputies, dispatchers, and Air Support help identify suspects and remove them from our communities,” the sheriff’s department said.
