Thriller
Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi star in Emerald Fennell’s much-talked-about dark comedy, which follows an outcast Oxford University student who is invited to a posh place by another student. Expect obsession, manipulation and an infamous bathtub scene that you’ll want to scrub out of your brain.
All Old Knives (2022)
This Prime Video spy broadcaster didn’t impress all critics, but they weren’t completely underwhelmed either. The film introduces two former lovers and co-workers at a CIA station in Vienna — played by Chris Pine and Thandiwe Newton — who reunite under unlikely circumstances. A CIA mole could have played a role in the hijacking, and the agency sends Pine to question Newton. The twisty, flashback-heavy flick is engaging enough to go back to when you need an evening escape.
At the beginning of this comic, we learn that college seniors and best friends Kunle and Sean plan to become the first men in Black to complete the “legendary journey,” a task that involves team-jumping on an incredible scale. But when the students find a young white woman lying on the floor of their house, the night turns into something else entirely. The film, which mixes humor and social commentary, is sometimes intense and scary. An important part is the bond between Kunle and Sean, played by the great RJ Cyler and Donald Elise Watkins.
Jokes
A team of advanced actors delve into London’s criminal underworld in Deep Cover — a new Prime Video feature that’s as exciting as it sounds. Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom and Nick Mohammed (Ted Lasso’s assistant coach Nate) as comedians in the middle of the game, and there are many alums of HBO’s Game of Thrones shows (Sean Bean, Paddy Considine and Sonoya Mizuno).
Catherine is called Birdy (2022)
The medieval film stars Bella Ramsey — who you may know as Lyanna Mormont from Game of Thrones or Ellie from The Last of Us — as Lady Catherine, aka Birdy. Unlike those HBO dramas, this comedy sees a smart teenager come up with ways to avoid his very wealthy father, portrayed by Ripley’s Andrew Scott, who wants him to marry. Directed by Lena Dunham and based on Karen Cushman’s 1994 children’s novel of the same name, Catherine Called Birdy is clever and entertaining.
Drama
The Burial is a gripping legal drama starring two Oscar-winning actors — two reasons to work it into this week’s broadcasts. Tommy Lee Jones’ funeral home owner teams up with Jamie Foxx’s lawyer in an underdog story inspired by true events.
This crowd-pleasing sports drama is one of Prime’s best-known originals and well worth a watch. Ben Affleck directs the story of the origin of Air Jordan sneakers, with stars Matt Damon, Jason Bateman, Viola Davis and others. The star-studded cast includes Joel Edgerton, Viggo Mortensen and Colin Farrell.

Narrated by Fernanda Echevarría del Rivero and animated with songs, the film provides insights from Kahlo’s illustrated diaries, letters, essays and print interviews. Filmmakers were able to find research material that the public could not see.
Do you love Lucy? What about smart, silly documentaries? If so, you’ll need to engage with this Amy Poehler-directed examination of the lives of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. The feel-good documentary draws on home movies and audio provided by Ball and Arnaz’s daughter, Lucie Arnaz, and charts everything that led to the couple’s miraculous run on the ’50s sitcom I Love Lucy. As you wrap up, the fictional movie about the stars, Being the Ricardos is also on Prime Video.
Romance
The Idea of You broke the box office record with its trailer, and the hit romantic drama is a hit with critics. Based on Robinne Lee’s book, the movie stars Nicholas Galitzine as a boy band singer and Anne Hathaway as a fan’s mother. The two begin a relationship after meeting unexpectedly at Coachella, leading to some swoon-worthy moments, though their separate lives (and ages) complicate things. Hathaway, predictably, makes for an interesting lead.
“For as long as I can remember,” Rudy, the main character of Música, explains in the film, “every day, ordinary sounds, I turn into a rhythm.” A semi-autobiographical flick from Vine and YouTube star Rudy Mancuso, Música follows a young man with synesthesia at the crossroads of love. The 90-minute arrival story is lively and entertaining.

The film follows the son of an American President and a British prince who are rivals, but after they have to convince the public otherwise, it opens the door to romance. If you need another reason to get into the love story, a sequel featuring the stars of the original movie — Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine — is in development.
