Kevin Denkey’s price tag has now been revealed with Coventry planning a summer move
Coventry City are now lining up a summer move for the “unique” 44-cap international, but there could be competition for his signature from a Championship rival.
Coventry are looking forward to a striker as they face the challenge of the title
Coventry could not have asked for a better set of results on Saturday afternoon, winning 2-0 at West Bromwich Albion, while all of their major promotion rivals failed in their games.
Second-placed Middlesbrough were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Oxford United, while other promotion rivals Millwall, Ipswich Town and Hull City lost.
The Sky Blues are now in the strongest position to reach the Premier League, sitting three points clear of Boro and nine ahead of third-placed Millwall, and Frank Lampard was left very impressed with his side’s performance at the Hawthorns.
Lampard says: “The quality of the game as a whole impressed me, the way we went about it, two fantastic goals of real quality in different ways. We weren’t really intimidated by them.”
However, the manager may need to strengthen in the summer transfer window, if he can guide his side to the top flight, and now the striker has been identified as a target.
That’s according to reliable journalist Alan Nixon (via The 72), who says Coventry are planning a summer move for FC Cincinnati star Kevin Denkey, although there could be competition for his signature, with promotion rivals Middlesbrough also keen.
Denkey would be open to a move to England in the summer, and a deal could be made for around £13m, the same amount the MLS club paid to sign the player from Cercle Brugge in 2024.
Promotion rivals Coventry and Middlesbrough sweat it out with Ipswich keen to sign “1v1 demon”
The Tractor Boys are eager to win this race to find a new striker.
The 44-capped Togolese finished the 2023/24 campaign as the top scorer in the Jupiler Pro League, and has continued to excel in the USA…
“Exceptional” Denkey is in hot form
After moving to MLS, the striker was praised by his team’s General Manager, Chris Albright, who said: “We are excited to welcome Kévin to FC Cincinnati. He is a talented, young striker with a special personality.”
Since then, the 25-year-old has continued to reward Albright’s faith in him with 20 goals and three assists in 39 games for FC Cincinnati in all competitions, and is currently in red-hot form.
The African striker has certainly made a strong start to his campaign, scoring two goals and one assist in his first two games, most recently finding the net in a 2-0 win against Atlanta United.
Denkey is yet to prove himself in one of Europe’s biggest leagues, so it would be a gamble for Coventry to sign him, but the FC Cincinnati star is showing signs that he is ready to move to the Premier League.
