Conor Benn Zuffa’s New Deal Despite Prograis Doubts

Conor Benn has signed a multi-year deal with Zuffa Boxing days after his unanimous decision win over Regis Prograis at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, a result that saw the 37-year-old go in injured and unable to last 10 rounds. The deal, confirmed this week, follows Benn’s first appearance under the Zuffa banner and locks him in to a long-term deal despite questions about the quality of that performance.
That’s the part that separates this from regular signing. Benn’s win at Prograis was expected to be a showpiece, but it didn’t live up to that standard. The opponent’s condition and age were obvious going in, and the fight didn’t change the way Benn was viewed in the welterweight division. In many cases, that kind of exit leads to a wait-and-see approach from the new promoter.
Dana White and his team went in a different direction. Rather than hold back, Zuffa committed Benn to a multi-year contract, suggesting the decision was based on market value and long-term positioning rather than what happened in the ring last weekend.
Benn’s run lately has been uneven in terms of weight and balance. He moved up to middleweight in two fights with Chris Eubank Jr., split those results, then moved down to face the 150-pound Prograis as he targeted the welterweight title. That lack of a planned approach makes his next move unclear after the Prograis bout.

The agreement answers that in one way. Zuffa prefers to build around Benn now, not after the game is done. The next step will need to show that belief, because the last fight didn’t sell.
Zuffa clarified that they are running two different songs. There’s the Paramount+ series for standard roster building, and then there’s the SELA-backed Super Fights.
It is reported that Benn has been included in the Super Fight track. This means that Zuffa doesn’t need him to be the pound for pound king that dominates the division, but rather they need him to be a name that can sell out the main event and partners like Turki Alalshikh.
Even though he’s been struggling with the 37-year-old Prograis, Benn still has a huge UK following and a legacy name. In the eyes of a promoter looking for the content of a global broadcast deal, a flawed star with a big personality and fan base is often more valuable than a perfect but boring competitor.
