‘Paradise’ Season 2: What is Jane’s message?

What happened to baby Jane?

No, I don’t just name Joan Crawford movies. I wonder what in the world is going on with Jane Driscoll (Nicole Brydon Bloom) Paradise Season 2. Specifically, what was the deal with an open-ended episode 6, focusing on Jane’s birth?

BREAKFUT:

‘Paradise’ Season 2: Who is Alex?

The episode, aptly titled “Jane,” flashes back to May 29, 1997, when City Circuit employee Don (Francois Battiste) receives a strange email from someone named AlexQ.

“A KILLER WILL BE BORN ON JUNE 6 at 12:01,” the message read. “HE WOULD STOP WHEN IT’S IMPORTANT IF YOU GET THE MESSAGE FULFILLED.”

AlexQ continues to send Don these messages via email, instant message, phone, and pager. Instead of dismissing them as strange messages, Don takes them seriously and heads to the hospital in June. There, he accuses newborn Jane and her mother (Laura Campbell) when they leave, saying that baby Jane is going to be a murderer, and that he has a message to stop her. (Side question: Did Don just ask every mom out of the hospital when their baby was born? Or did he get lucky on the first try?)

Do we ever find out what the message is? Unfortunately it is not. Don is too busy shouting you have a message to really deliver. And we don’t see what the message is in any of the many, many emails and texts that Don receives. It is very difficult, Paradise! Still, the whole message debate goes into some of the biggest questions of the season.

Paradise you must have time travel, right?

Since the first few episodes of Season 2, I’ve been convinced that Paradise pulls some time travel or various shenanigans. Episode 6 confirms this, because how else can anyone tell Don Jane’s exact date and time of birth? How else would they know he would grow up to be a killer? And how else would they find a way to stop him?

BREAKFUT:

Wait, is ‘Paradise’ Season 2 doing time travel?

It sounds like something big is going to play out with Jane in future episodes, and that whoever is involved in that will somehow be able to send a message to Don in the past.

Paradise Season 2, I ask again, who is Alex?

Who could that be? Based on the username, it will be someone named AlexQ, which brings us back to the big question of Season 2: Who in the world is Alex? So far, the only Alex we’ve met is the dead wife (Gwen Holloway) of professor and owner of Vestige Quantum Henry Miller (Patrick Fischler). However, in 1997, Alex would still be alive, so he would be able to send Don information about Jane. (If so, maybe the Q in his username stands for Quantum?) Of course, the big question after that remains: How did he get Jane’s intel in the first place?

Alex is also the name of someone (or something?) who is tied up in a secret project that Sinatra (Julianne Nicholson) is working on. Perhaps Sinatra, feeling threatened by Jane, sent a message back in time to prevent Jane from finally killing him?

While we’re on the subject of worrying about who Alex is, we also have to ask, who is Don? I don’t want to believe that Alex (or anyone) would want anyone to tell a newborn that he is a murderer. Don should be connected to this program in a wider way, but it seems Paradise he’ll keep us begging for answers for at least one more episode.

Paradise now streaming on Hulu, with new episodes every Monday.
