Rangers are already in talks to sign their own Moussa Dembele for £5m

There is an exciting feeling in this Glasgow Rangers side too, with the feeling that Danny Rohl is creating a youthful base that can be built on for years to come at Ibrox.

Defensively, Tuur Rommens and Emmanuel Fernandez have settled in well in Glasgow, as has Tochi Chukwuani, while there were reasons to be encouraged about the young strike pairing of Ryan Naderi and Youssef Chermiti.

This being said, the potential players are accompanied by disagreements, as Naderi has not left his place in the Premiership, while Chermiti is ranked second in this division with 13 missed opportunities.

With the pair still aged 22 and 21 respectively, it would be unfair to expect them to be a done deal, although that doesn’t mean the Gers can’t still look for some upgrades this summer.

The latest in Rangers’ search for a striker

It’s not really a good reflection of the Gers recruitment team that a new striker is still seen as a priority, even after signing Naderi, Chermiti and Bojan Miovski last year.

The three players have scored 13 goals in the Premiership between them, below the division’s top scorer, Tawanda Maswanhise (16), while James Tavernier remains Glasgow’s top scorer in all competitions.

With that in mind, there is a sense that Rohl and co could look to re-move the long-term target to Ibrox, with reports last week suggesting that the Light Blues have renewed their interest in Sheffield United star Tyrese Campbell.

As noted by the Daily Record, there were suggestions that talks about a move should be postponed in January, when both Rangers and Celtic made enquiries, having previously pursued a deal for the man who was at Stoke City back in 2020.

Campbell was nearing the end of his contract at the time, and his future is still in doubt today, and the 26-year-old has a real decision to make with more than 12 months left on his contract.

That contract situation should ensure the Englishman is available for something cheap, with a fee of around £5m to be paid.

Why Campbell would be a good signing for Rangers

More than a decade has passed since then, and despite talking about Rangers’ interest in Campbell in 2020, Ibrox legend Kris Boyd has likened the potential deal to Celtic’s signing of Moussa Dembele from England’s EFL four years ago.

In Dembele’s case, his expiring contract ensured the Parkhead side could secure a deal for just £500k, with the Frenchman continuing to shine in Scottish football, scoring 51 goals in 94 appearances in all competitions.

This record includes seven goals in just nine meetings with Rangers, which has become a landmark for Celtic strikers since then.

Rangers boss Rohl wants to sign Emmanuel Fernandez next at Ibrox

It is reported that Rangers are interested in signing Emmanuel Fernandez, who could be the next star.

Those who believe in the Gers may not be too concerned about what happens elsewhere in Glasgow, but it’s fair to say that they could do well to figure in Dembele’s style to make an immediate impact at Ibrox.

In Campbell, now far more experienced than six years ago, Rohl could find just that, the young Englishman boasting a solid, not-so-good record south of the border.

He still scored just 17 goals in 73 games for Sheffield, although that included 11 goals in the Championship last season, despite starting just 22 league and playoff games.

A man who also scored 36 goals in 164 appearances for Stoke, and five in 15 loan spells at Shrewsbury Town, Campbell is not playing, but he is certainly in the minority, while boasting an advantage over Rohl in working as part of the front two at Bramall Lane.

The £5m man has scored just six goals this term, despite missing just five ‘big chances’, as he was particularly scrutinized last term with a goal conversion rate of 21%.

Like Dembele, he is a striker who can stay behind with his speed and run, such qualities were highlighted by former Sheffield United striker, Brian Deane:

“He’s a classic type of player, and he’s got that physicality to him with decent speed and a bit of variety.”

Recent signings from the EFL haven’t always gone to plan for the Gers, but hopefully Campbell can feature a younger Joe Rothwell and Fernandez more.
