Mauricio Pochettino was “willing” to join Tottenham as a replacement for Roberto De Zerbi
Alasdair Gold has now dropped a new update on Tottenham Hotspur’s manager search, making it clear that Roberto De Zerbi was not the only option being considered.
De Zerbi closes Tottenham career
De Zerbi is set to become Tottenham’s new manager, following talks on Monday, with Fabrizio Romano confirming the expected appointment yesterday, saying: “De Zerbi is really close to being the next manager of Tottenham Hotspur.
“Here, what is expected soon. Tottenham decided to enter De Zerbi with a big financial offer, a big contract offer, a five-year contract for De Zerbi, a very important salary, one of the best salaries for a manager in the Premier League.”
Tim Sherwood has his doubts about his former club appointing the Italian, saying he is “far from safe”, and that his style of play is not what Spurs need at this stage of the season, with their Premier League status on the line.
A number of other managers have been linked with a move to the N17, including Sean Dyche, who was seriously considered at one point, and Adi Hutter, although the former AS Monaco manager recently ruled out the controversy in a public statement.
ENIC also considered a title-winning manager before moving to De Zerbi
In a review from Gold on X, there are “question marks” over whether De Zerbi will be able to use his style of play quickly enough to save Spurs from relegation, given that they have just seven games to go in safety.
Gold also claim Andoni Iraola and Mauricio Pochettino were under consideration for the summer, with the latter “keen” to return to north London following the USMNT World Cup campaign.
However, with Igor Tudor winning just one game in seven in charge, ENIC was forced to appoint a new manager earlier than expected, leaving De Zerbi, who has been out of action since leaving Marseille last month, as the logical choice.
Of course, appointing Pochettino would go a long way for fans to return to the sidelines, as the Argentinian led Tottenham to the 2019 Champions League final, and maintained a solid record throughout his time at the club.

The 54-year-old went on to win the Ligue 1 title with Paris Saint-Germain, before a short stint at Chelsea, but is still admired by Spurs fans, at least judging by their reaction on the flight from London to Madrid.
That ship seems to have sailed, however, and De Zerbi’s time may be about to begin.
