Sex is for sale, but you may not know how much.

There are people who make a living by having sex or looking sexy, but there are plenty of others who make money from their line.

“I thought my only option was to teach about sex in primary and secondary schools through charities,” said Amari, a sex therapist and social media manager. “And now all of a sudden I have these two businesses where I’m working in a completely different way than I thought.”

As of 2023, Amari has run Admin by Amariagency that provides services from administrative work to social media to copywriting and SEO, all for a variety of employees in the sex industry. He ran again Sex training by Amaribut his former business is bread and butter.

“Sexual health nurses, gynecologists, obstetricians, all the way to traders,” explained the customers. It doesn’t stop there: “Only fan models, sex toy companies, sex dens, playgroups…charities, abortion charities. The list…is crazy.”

Mashable interviewed Amari about how she went from being a university student to being a right-wing person to show the sexuality among us.

“It accidentally became my full-time job”

When I studied sociology at university, “every subject I was allowed to choose was about sex in some way or another,” Amari says. Topics included gender, sexuality, sex work, sexuality, feminism, and gender-based violence.

She volunteered for various charities, such as a sexual and domestic violence charity. He would do various administrative tasks, social media work, and help with events. Eventually, she got a job in a nursery school and thought that when she graduated, she would go into a charity or women’s rights or childcare route.

Then came COVID. But he ended up working full-time, as nurseries were always open in the UK. Amari liked working with children, so she decided to enroll in teacher training.

However, unfortunately, it was a sad experience. Between working 80-hour weeks and not getting paid because of the nature of the show, “I was incredibly stressed, mentally and physically,” she told Mashable. “My joints attacked me. I was walking with crutches when I was 23 years old.”

“I really couldn’t work with children,” she said. “My body just shut down.”

He also did not have a good experience with his advisor. All this made him wonder what he was going to do with his life.

Having volunteered at university, she sent her CV to charities and got a role in management and communications at a forestry school nursery. While the pay was low, work was far away, and Amari decided, “This is the life I want to live.”

It was during this time that she also received her degree in sex education, but realized that she was unable to attend school due to her physical condition.

Months later, a reproductive justice organization reached out to her, offering to administer 10 hours a month. Amari realized that he could do admin and spend a little pocket money, so he signed up as a freelancer.

“That’s how I founded the agency,” he said.

He reached out to other charities to volunteer, and it slowly became his full-time gig.

“It just happened to be my full-time job,” she said. “Suddenly no one said, ‘Oh my god’…I said that a sex teacher reached out to me, a person selling sex reached out to me. I had a company selling sex and reached out to me,” he said, after finding him on Instagram.

“I didn’t even know that all these people needed this kind of support,” she said. But now, he works with six clients and has a team of more than a dozen people who handle administrative and communications work.

Amari’s daily life is “cold” these days, he said. Sometimes he’ll make prospecting calls with potential clients, negotiate product deals, do interviews or podcasts, or write articles, but he said that’s “a side hustle.”

“I wake up whenever I want,” he said. “I get to go to the gym whenever I want. I get to do Pilates whenever I want…It’s mostly me in bed using my computer to be honest.”

That doesn’t mean he always raises his feet. As a social media blogger, you know all about the platforms’ rules. On his website, Amari has a guide on shadow banning, which is when someone’s account is blocked by a social media app. Sex vendors, erotic artists, and LGBTQ content creators told Mashable they’ve seen it Instagram accounts are closed or just banned.

“The first time I got suspended, I was like, ‘Oh my god, I’m going to lose my job. My whole business is going to go bad. I need to get a new job.’ I was stressed and depressed,” Amari said. But you’ve done a lot of research and talked to customers who have experienced shadow bans, so you’ve gathered that information over the years.

“We understand the shadow ban, we understand the censorship,” he said. “But I can’t promise you that nothing will happen to your account.” You have some very good habits, though: separate your platforms (have two or three social media accounts), and go outside of social media and with an email marketing list and website.

Depending on the client, he also checks certain words (a content moderation phenomenon we’ve seen on social media the past few years – “seggs,” anyone?), but some customers don’t want them.

But there’s one thing she’s learned from being in the sex industry, which she says is “such a fun industry.”

“I learned a lot in those first six months,” he said. “A perfect storm.”

Now that she’s settled into it, it sounds like she has the right community despite the distance – not that she doesn’t like working from home.

“If there’s one thing I want people to take away from this, it’s finding a long-distance job,” he joked.
