Leeds are holding talks to sign Santiago Gimenez with Sunderland also eyeing a move

Leeds United have held talks to sign the “unstoppable” striker in the summer transfer window, with Premier League rivals Sunderland now feared to be poached.

Leeds battle Sunderland for “unstoppable” forward

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has already reached the 10-goal mark in the Premier League, but he hasn’t been so strong in recent weeks, finding the net once in his last seven games.

Having failed to win any of their last four games, Leeds find themselves in dire straits, currently sitting just three points off the relegation zone, after bringing in attacking midfielder Facundo Buonanotte on loan from Brighton during the January window.

This is despite Mick Brown suggesting that the Whites are still keen to sign a new striker, saying: “Leeds will still want to sign a new striker.

“It’s easy to get caught up in recent results, and Calvert-Lewin has been very impressive, but that doesn’t take away from all the games when he’s not playing.”

“He’s going in a good way and for his sake I hope he can keep it up, but that doesn’t mean Leeds should be ready to put their faith in him.”

Having missed out on the signing of a new striker in the winter, Leeds are now stepping up their pursuit of AC Milan striker Santiago Gimenez, who have just opened initial talks, according to journalist Sebastien Vidal at X.

Sunderland now fear a carjacking, having already held talks over a deal for Gimenez earlier this season, and are still monitoring the situation, ahead of the summer transfer frenzy.

The 24-year-old is currently on the treatment table with an ankle injury, but enjoyed his first campaign at AC Milan, scoring five goals and providing two assists in 14 games last season.

“Unstoppable” Gimenez could be the best signing for Leeds

The midfielder was prolific during his time in the Netherlands, scoring 65 goals and 14 assists in 105 games for Feyenoord, who at the time were hailed as unstoppable by Jacek Kulig.

He enjoyed a very good season.

Since then, the £77k-a-week striker has had a difficult season, failing to score in Serie A before being sacked at the end of October, but his previous success suggests he could still be an excellent addition to Daniel Farke’s side.

Bringing in a new striker this summer would be a disappointment, with Lukas Nmecha having scored just one goal in an open game in 2026, and Calvert-Lewin’s purple streak appears to be over.

However, Leeds should continue to dominate Gimenez, as it is unclear how the Mexican’s long-term ankle injury will affect him going forward, having missed the last 19 Serie A games.
